New Release Book Review: Twister by Kayla Halleur

Twister was a super sweet insta-love read; Daniel and Marshall were meant to be. I enjoyed reading Daniel and Marshall’s story and adored Rose, the 12-year-old who is sassy and smart. So, yes, their relationship is super fast, about as fast as the twister that brings them together, but it’s fiction, and I was happy to run with it in this case. I don’t always enjoy insta-love stories, but these guys were just too cute.

The whole tornado experience is something I hope I never have to experience myself, and I don’t know how people deal with living in an area where their lives and properties are often at risk.

Daniel’s ex-husband, Jackson’s storyline, was done well. Domestic abuse is never an easy topic, and I thought the way Marshall handled it was perfect. I loved that he and Daniel were so supportive of him. I’m looking forward to Jackson getting his story next. I felt that Marshall’s brother’s abuse towards him was just as toxic as Jackson’s partner’s abuse, and I think the way this was handled was the only outcome; just because someone is family doesn’t mean we should put up with abuse.

This was a fun read with some serious topics, and I’m looking forward to more by this author.

About the book

Now that I’ve graduated college, I’m expected to join the family accounting business even though I hate everything to do with finance.

What’s not expected? Getting stuck in a small town on my way home after a tornado nearly destroys my Jeep, or the lonely single dad and his adorable preteen daughter who offer their spare room for my stay.

Sometimes the most unexpected things can lead to the best life decisions.

Marshall
I’ve put off going home after graduating as long as I can, but there’s no excuses left. My cubicle-filled future is here whether I like it or not.

Until I drive into a huge, terrifying tornado, that is.

Now I’m stuck in a small town while I wait for my Jeep to get fixed. Thankfully, the adorable young girl who survived the twister with me talks her dad into offering me one of their spare rooms, so I don’t have to waste money at the local motel or contend with the gossipy motel owner.

Maybe I should’ve declined the offer, but there’s something about her dad that makes me think he’s desperate for another adult to talk to.

I’m only in town for the week, but that’ll be plenty of time to give him a reprieve from his hectic, but lonely, life. If only he didn’t turn out to be everything I was looking for….

Daniel
My preteen daughter is convinced that I’m sad and lonely, and that my life would be infinitely better with someone to share it with. Even if that was something I wanted to explore, my farm takes up too much time and energy to consider a night out.

Meeting someone new isn’t on my radar at all, until a gorgeous guy literally falls at my feet in his effort to escape the twister that sideswipes the local gas station.

Less than an hour later, my daughter invites him to stay with us while he’s stuck in town.

Maybe I should’ve said no, but there’s something about him that makes me want to help and protect him.

I’ll admit that I find myself wildly attracted to him. If only he wasn’t so much younger than me….

Twister is a standalone story featuring an overworked farmer who loves his daughter even when she’s trying to set him up with young strangers, a recent college graduate who doesn’t love the idea of spending the rest of his life stuck in a cubicle, and a love story that blossoms in a small town with some very colorful residents.

About the author

Kayla is a budding new Australian author who feels incredibly lost when needing to talk about herself (especially in the third person), preferring to let her stories speak for her. When she’s not writing, she can usually be found on the couch wrapped in a blanket burrito, with her head in a book. That type of existence suits her introverted heart well, much to the chagrin of her extroverted relatives.
She freely admits that she doesn’t know what the heck she’d doing, but she hopes she’s at least learning as she goes. She’s thankful that you’ve looked her Amazon bio up, and hopes that you’ll give her stories a chance (and will hopefully enjoy them).

Exclusive Excerpt – Interview with the characters from The Burnt

What was your writing process like for this book?

The author has decided to pass this question on to two of his characters.

Declan: “I’ve been with this author for three books now and I’m not sure he has a writing process. He starts off with an idea, which obviously links to me, and a rough idea of how the story ends, then he lets us run with it.”

Charlie: “Well, he is in control because he does write everything down as we do it.”

Declan: “He’s a glorified typist.”

Charlie: “I’ve heard him talk about the process. He lets us try things out—”

Declan: “And when he doesn’t like what we’re doing he starts us over and it’s up to us again.”

Charlie: “Come on. He’s not that hopeless.”

Declan: “In Mann Hunt he had the wrong killer at first. And he’s the writer!”

Charlie: “According to his partner Scott there were several options he could have made, and Scott thought the one he ended up with was stronger.”

Declan: “So, now Scott’s the writer?”

Charlie: “No! He’s the story editor. He makes sure that what Peter writes is clear. Writing’s a team sport.”

Declan: “So, I’m right when I say Peter has no plan at the start.”

Charlie: “Yeah, that’s right…in a way. No plan, but process. And it’s an organic one that experiments with options in order to build the best possible story where you get the bad guy and I get—”

Declan: “Me!”

Charlie: “Exactly.”

What are three movies or shows your characters would enjoy?

Declan: “This one’s easy—‘The Mechanic’, ‘Snatch’ and ‘The Beekeeper’.”

Charlie: “They’re all Jason Statham films, and they’re all basically the same thing, over and over again.”

Declan: “So? They’re great. Bad guy does something wrong to an innocent person which ticks off Statham who takes them down. What else could you ask for in a movie?”

Charlie: “Well maybe a little romance, like in ‘Love Simon’, ‘Red, White and Royal Blue’ or ‘Heartstopper’.”

Declan: “Heartstopper doesn’t count. It’s a TV series.”

Charlie: “Shut up and give me a kiss.”

What are three songs or artists your characters would enjoy?

Charlie: “I would definitely go for dance music. Anything that gets my feet moving. Like Antonia Iacobescu’s “Clap Clap”, Elvana Gjata’s “Besame En Rio”, or even that old classic, “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” by Wham!”

Declan: “I think music is something you talk louder over until it ends.”

#6Degrees of Separation – August 2025

This is a monthly link-up hosted by KateW at Books Are My Favourite and Best. Each month a book is chosen as a starting point and linked to six other books to form a chain. A book doesn’t need to be connected to all the other books on the list, only to the one next to it in the chain. The rules are:

  • Link the books together in any way you like.
  • Provide a link in your post to the meme at Books Are My Favourite and Best.
  • Share these rules in your post.
  • Paste the link to your post in the comments on Kate’s post and/or the Linky Tool on that post.
  • Invite your blog readers to join in and paste their links in the comments and/or the Linky Tool.
  • Share your post on Twitter using the #6Degrees hashtag.
  • Be nice! Visit and comment on other posts and/or retweet other #6Degrees posts

This month’s starting book is Yael van der Wouden‘s The Safekeep, A “razor-sharp, perfectly plotted” (The Sunday Times) tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women staying in the same house in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961—a powerful exploration of the legacy of WWII and the darker parts of our collective past. An exhilarating tale of twisted desire, histories and homes, and the unexpected shape of revenge

When I typed this into Amazon, as well as noting it had won awards and been nominated for several others, it said it was a best seller in lesbian fiction, which led me to think about a novel by an Australian author that I still have sitting on my TBR pile, House of Longing by Tara Calaby; A compulsively readable historical romance, House of Longing combines an effortless instinct for narrative with impeccable research, lightly worn.

I decided to continue this link with another historical lesbian fiction novel by another Australian author, The Restless Truth by Freya Marske; Knives Out meets The Binding in this historical romp full of magic, romance and adventure.

With some help from Google, I found Devotion by Hannah Kent, another Australian author whose book is also tagged as lesbian historical fiction.

Then I remembered a book I have on my shelf that I bought several years ago, Making Trouble (Tongued with Fire): An Imagined History of Harriet Elphinstone Dick and Alice C Moon by Sue Ingleton, a story of two women who, in love, bravely immigrated to Melbourne, who then began a revoloution in Australia that exposed the patriarchal laws that controlled and governed womens bodies, they were the early pioneers of physiotherapy, healthy diet, gymnastics and swimming for women.

Next, by another Australian author, is a lesbian coming-of-age novel I read in 2018, If I Tell You by Alicia Tuckerman; Life and love don’t wait until you’re ready, but what if finding yourself means losing everything you’ve ever known? – My Review

And finally, another YA coming-of-age story, Dancing Barefoot by Alice Boyle, is a feel-good romance about growing up queer, figuring out your place in the world, staying true to yourself and your friends, finding love, and learning to embrace the obstacles life throws in your path.

All of these books are now on my TBR list because they all sound like great reads.

Next month (September 6, 2025), we’ll start with the winner of the 2025 Miles Franklin Literary Award, Ghost Cities by Siang Lu.

Until next time, happy reading.

Pre Release Book Review: The Ghost Walk by Karen Herbert

Where to start? I’m not sure how to rate this, as it wasn’t what I was expecting. Sold as a medical thriller, I was looking forward to getting stuck into this novel. The cover is atmospheric, and the opening chapter had me interested in reading more. But this disappointed in the thriller category, at most it could be classified as a mystery, with the tension of the mystery not coming into play until the last 20 or so pages.

I was also thrown by the setting, based in Perth, I couldn’t geographically place any of the places this book mentioned (other than the mention of City Beach), reading the afterward at the back, it’s because most of it is made up to suit the story.

This was the story of a woman, Ruby, who has cystic fibrosis. After the initial chapter where we find out Gabe, her lover, has been found dead, it becomes the story of her life, alternating between past and present, talking about her illness and her relationships with her family, friends, and, of course, with Gabe. If this had been touted as contemporary fiction with a mystery, then I would have enjoyed it a lot more than I did. As it is, I kept waiting for the ‘thriller’ part of the story to happen, and it never did unless you count the tension near the end. Because of this, it just didn’t hold my attention, and I would read a couple of chapters, put it down and come back to it.

Coming at it from the view of being contemporary fiction, it was an enjoyable enough read if somewhat slow, the ending and the last 60 pages was probably the most interesting part for me, uncovering the mystery behind Gabe and his death. I also found learning about cystic fibros interesting, it’s not an illness I knew a great deal about before reading this book.

If you go into this not expecting a thriller and expect the mystery to only be a small part of the storyline, then I think you’ll find it an enjoyable read.

New Release Book Review: Cleats and Pumps by Blake Allwood

4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Amos and Tommy’s story was a wonderful read. The book included the prequel to Cleats and Pumps, Alec in Wanderlust, originally published in the Romance is a Drag anthology, which I also enjoyed.

I liked that we got Amos and Tommy’s backstory; their reconnection contained so many emotions because of all that had occurred. Tommy has never stopped loving Amos, to the point that he hasn’t allowed himself to move on. I can’t imagine having a connection that strong that I didn’t eventually get over it.

Amos’s love of drag is his Achilles’ heel and causes his team to stand him down; it also causes issues for Tommy in his job as a reporter. I will never understand why something like this is so frowned upon, but then I’m a live and let live kind of person and try not to judge others for what they enjoy or who they love. If only the world could be like this.

The lack of communication between Tommy and Amos is part of what led to their friendship ending, and when they reconnect, they both need to be brave enough to look at what they want and communicate that to each other. I wanted to shake them both at times, in both timelines.

There is drama from outside with dodgy reporters after a story, some of whom will do anything to get one. There are good friends and family members, and new opportunities for both if they are open to them.

I really enjoyed spending time with these characters and would be more than happy if the author created more stories in this series.

New Release Book Review: The Great Maple Mistake by Beck Grey

This was a cute, low-angst read set in a small town. As you’d expect from a small town romance, there’s plenty of gossip and busy body’s but none of it is malicious, just a lot of well-meaning people who embrace their fellow community members.

Alex and Cody are great guys, and I liked that they were both willing to jump in and give their connection a go. They made such a great couple, and I liked how everyone, including Alex’s family, embraced Cody as a newcomer to Maplewood.

There was one statement Cody made when Alex told him something that he was slightly afraid of telling him, that made me wish everyone thought the way Cody did.

This was very different to what I’m used to reading from Beck Grey, but I like that she has written something with less series themes than in her other series, though I do Love her other series.

I will have to check out the other books in this multi-author series.

About the book

A small-town photographer who’s given up on love meets a smoking hot firefighter with a smile to melt hearts. Try as they might, some flames are impossible to resist.

Alex:

Maplewood is as wonderful and cliché as you’d imagine. Sure, the town gossips share everyone’s business, but neighbors look out for each other. Nowhere else would be as accepting of me as this queer-friendly small town I grew up in. The only problem? A lack of eligible bachelors. So, when a gorgeous new guy moves to town, the Maplewood grapevine is in full swing, and this time I’m paying attention. Though maybe not close enough, because Cody and I literally run into each other. I hit him with my body, he hits me with his boy-next-door smile, and poof, my heart’s gone. Too bad sexy, sweet guys like him aren’t really interested in guys like me. Once he gets to know me, he’ll change his mind.

Cody:

You’d think that moving to a small town named Maplewood means I’m prepared for maple-flavored everything. You’d be wrong. And the stuff is everywhere, so how do I tell my new neighbors that the taste makes me gag? That problem is solved when a misunderstanding has them believing I’m allergic. Sure it saves me from eating any more maple. It also feels like I’m lying. I try to explain, but there’s no stopping the Maplewood gossip mill. Especially when the adorable photographer I almost trample fans that flame. But I can’t even be mad about it. Alex has this sweetness to him that pulls me in like gravity. And little by little he’s letting me get close. Eventually I’ll convince him to trust me, to give us a real chance. When he does, will that mean I’ll owe ‘us’ to that annoying maple mistake?

The Great Maple Mistake is a low-angst, small-town contemporary LGBTQ romance about a local cutie looking for love, a sexy firefighter with a maple aversion, baking show obsessions, fluffy kittens, rumor mills, and a connection that’s more than skin deep.

With the highest percentage of LGBTQIA+ residents in Vermont, Maplewood is a town where everyone belongs. And with festivals year round, there’s always something fun happening! This multi-author, low-angst queer series features ten standalone romances—each set against the backdrop of a different festival. Come for the celebrations, stay for the happily-ever-afters!

This month’s starting book is the 2025 Stella Prize winner, Michelle de Kretser’s work of autofiction, Theory & Practice.

I haven’t read Theory & Practice and my brain is too tired this week to hunt for books that might be along the same lines, so I’m starting with a couple of books I have that have Theory in the title.

First up is The Felicity Theory by Davina Stone; this is one of my favourite books in the series and is an unlikely romance whilst on a road trip from Perth to Sydney in a bright coloured Combi van.

My second link is Conspiracy Theory by Elle Keaton; a dual POV, slow-burn, three-act, romantic suspense about a broody introvert and a somewhat patient Sheriff as they grope their way to a happily ever after.

For my third link I’m jumping to the word Conspiracy with Conspiracy of Lies by Kathryn Gauci; Part historical, part romance and part thriller, Conspiracy of Lies takes us on a journey through occupied France, from the picturesque villages of rural Brittany to the glittering dinner parties of the Nazi elite, in a story of courage, heartbreak and secrecy.

My fourth link is also the word Conspiracy with The Emperor’s Conspiracy by Michelle Diener; Set in Regency England during the Napoleonic Wars, this vivid and romantic historical novel goes from the most elegant ballrooms of London to the city’s most tawdry slums, as a spirited young woman helps unravel a plot by Napoleon to bleed England of all its gold.

My fifth link is Cupcakes and Conspiracy by Polly Holmes; A cozy mystery prequel about family ties, friendship and juicy town gossip. Who will attempt murder to protect their idyllic way of life?

My final book is linked by the word Cupcake and is perfect for Christmas in July, Cupcakes and Christmas by RJ Scott; The story of long nights in a wintry mountain hotel, a baking show with secrets, a snowman called Jeremy, and finding the greatest love of all.

A multi-genred chain this month.

Next months starting book is The Safekeep by Yael Van Der Wouden

Until next month, happy reading.

New Release Book Review: Everything That Kills Me by Barbara Elsborg

Another fabulous read by Barbara Elsborg, she is firmly in my favourite author category.

In Everything That Kills Me, I was taken on an emotional journey that covered around a decade of Jack and Zeph’s lives and their hard-won relationship.

My heart broke for both of these young men throughout this story, but I never gave up hoping they would get their happy ever after despite the barriers that kept them apart.

I’m glad I got the backstory of each of the MCs, as upsetting as some of it was, it was essential to understanding the journey their lives took.

Starting at age 16, seeing the way Zeph was treated by his family and by the kids at school made my heart ache for him, and I felt anger and dislike for his family; no family should treat their children or siblings the way they did. Meeting Jack at school and their short but deep connection is the catalyst for change he needs, even though it brings heartbreak on more than one occasion over the subsequent years.

My heart also went out to Jack, who at 6 was saved from a house fire and taken in by Thomas and trained to be an assassin, something he didn’t fully understand when he was given the choice at such a young age and something he eventually takes for granted as his future, until he meets Zeph and his view of the world, his life and his future are changed.

An emotional read full of ups and downs and doubts, and hopes, it doesn’t shy away from some of the darker aspects of life.

About the book

Two boys. One deadly secret. A love worth risking everything for.

Rescued from a raging inferno as a young child, Jack is homeschooled in more than English and maths. His saviour is training him to be an assassin. But when Jack is compelled to attend an ordinary school, in an ordinary English town, his carefully controlled life unravels.

Zeph, brilliant, passionate and determined, has his eyes set on Cambridge and a future in intelligence. He has no time for distractions, at least, not until Jack turns up at his school. He’s everything Zeph has secretly longed for but he has no idea his life will never be the same again.

As boys turn into men, the cost of their connection becomes clear. Jack’s secrets are dangerous, and each time he sees Zeph, the more the two of them are at risk. Jack knows he should walk away and not look back. Is a happy-ever-after possible when his life is full of secrets and lies, disappearances and deception?

But some things are meant to be.

Warning
Violence – this is about an assassin after all!
None of the following are major themes but occur in the cruelty to a child, bullying, homophobic and transphobic remarks, cancer, brief mention of eating disorder, brief mention of suicide, gambling, death of parents.
