Synopsis

Can a veterinarian lose his V-card before turning twenty-five? Oh, one hun p he can!

On the surface, I’m super sassy and just a little bit extra. But underneath, I’m hiding a painful secret from my past and one hugely embarrassing problem in my present—I’m still a…I’m still a…Dammit, I can’t even get it out.

Let’s just say it starts with V and ends in irgin.

Daly’s the new barista, and he takes Thirsty Thursdays to a whole new level. He’s drop-dead gorgeous with a sexy shaved head, ocean-blue eyes, and an insane smile that lights me up whenever he aims it my way. He’s also kind, friendly, and interesting. In other words, the perfect guy to be my first time.

A night of too much coconut tequila leads to us making a drunken pact. Daly will help me with my V-status issue, but he adds a caveat. We have to get to know each other first. Then, and only then, can the physical stuff happen.

It sounds simple enough. But the more I get to know him, the more I realize what we have is more than just a physical attraction. We share a connection. We like the same things. And stupidly, I’ve gone ahead and caught feelings for the guy.

This was never meant to be anything more than just a physical thing, so why has Daly got me going out of my mind the way he does?

“What I’m trying to say is that I like you, Daly. A lot.”

“I like you, too.”

Silence descends on us, giving us both time to think, to catch up with everything that’s been said and the implications of it all.

Three months—from when Daly first made the offer to sleep with me until the night before my birthday—is a funny length of time. Twelve weeks. Ninety days. An entire season. I can’t decide whether it’s long or short. But in the past two months we’ve spent together, it feels like both a lifetime and an instant.

It’s a little confusing. We were only meant to like each other enough so that when we had sex, we felt comfortable. Friendly-ish. No feelings. No relationship was ever on the cards for us. But the truth is, we’ve gotten to know each other so well. I’m pretty sure Daly hasn’t shared his news with a ton of people. I’ve opened up to him and told him things very few people know about me, too.

And despite seeing him almost every day, I want to keep seeing him. Spending more time with him. Getting to know him better. Helping him grow his business. Just being anywhere he is. That’s where I want to be.

I avert my gaze for this next part. Heat rises in my cheeks, but I say the words anyway. I’m not going to chicken out and regret not saying something ever again. “I realize it’s not in our contract. In fact, I think there’s an exclusion clause that specifically prohibits this very thing since we weren’t meant to develop romantic feelings for each other, but…I have. I’ve gone ahead and stupidly caught feelings for you.”

Daly chuckles, then explains, “When you put it like that, it sounds like you’re talking about a disease.” He takes my hand in his. “But if that’s the case, then I’ve got the exact same disease you have.”

“Really?”

“Really. Right from the very start, you’ve blown me away. But me being me, it took me months just to work up the courage to be able to string together more than a few words to say to you.”

“But then I swanned in with that hole punch gag.”

“Gag?” Daly arches an eyebrow. “Sure, let’s go with that and pretend like it was all planned.”

“Fine by me.” I laugh, feeling some of the tension in the air thinning out.

“I haven’t had a relationship since the cancer. Just hookups. Never anything serious. It worked for a while until it didn’t.”

“What changed?”

“I tried to convince myself that casual was the way to go. I figured no one would want to be with me and my post-cancer body, so I took anything serious or long-term off the table. I told myself that it was because I was living in London and didn’t want to meet someone only to have to do the long-distance thing. Maybe that was partly true, but I see more clearly now that I was mainly interested in protecting myself. Like Fulton said, it’s hard to trust someone when your body is…different.”

“But you’re a relationship kinda guy, aren’t you?” I hedge. I know what his answer will be before he says it.

“Yeah. I am.”

All the feelings I’ve got for him get amplified by the honesty and vulnerability he’s displaying right now. I close the space between us and cradle him in my arms. “Thank you for telling me. Everything. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you.” I work my hand up and down his back. “It means a lot to me that you trust me.”

I can hear him breathing, sensing his mind working overtime. “I do trust you,” he says softly. “I really do.”

New Release Audiobook Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt: Ice Angels by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

My Review

ARE YOU READY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH TODD AND DREW?

I was lucky enough to read this book and then a couple of weeks later listen to the audiobook. I loved reading it, and considering I struggle with American narrators, I actually did enjoy listening to it afterwards, I did struggle at times with the audio, keeping track of which character’s chapter it was, on listening to it it seemed much harder for me to tell the two characters apart than when I was reading it for myself.

I loved Todd (Cleevs) when I met him in Fire in the Ice and was really looking forward to his story. The tagline for this book is “Are you ready to fall in love with Todd and Drew?” and I certainly did fall in love with them both.

My heart went out to these two guys who had been together for three years but had kept it secret all that time, but the strain was starting to take its toll on both of their happiness and I completely understand. Long-distance relationships are hard, let alone when you can’t be open about them when you do catch up like these two have been doing.

It’s a shame when your sexual orientation can make or break your career, and though things over the years have changed and Drew coming out would not be the big thing it would have been 3+ years before due to there being several LGBTQI players out, he kept putting it off. But it was time for them to have a serious conversation and for Todd not to put his fears onto Drew that he might resent him if things don’t go well.

I loved that once they had the conversation, there was no procrastinating and Drew followed through with no hesitation, I really am not a fan of angsty romance books, so I like it when things run pretty smoothly.

I loved that their friends and teammates (mostly) were so supportive of their relationship and that Drew ‘coming out’ wasn’t a big deal for them (as it shouldn’t be, ever).

There were some really sweet lines between these two characters and I really hope I find my someone one day who feels about me the way these two felt about each other.

About the book

Drew and Cleevs love hockey, but they love each other more. How can the men find a way to save what matters most?

Todd Cleever and Drew Simon are crazy about each other. They started dating three years ago when “Cleevs” was a rookie defenseman for the Chicago Ice. Drew, the team’s captain, was a few years older than Cleevs. Both men were deep in the closet, but it didn’t take long for them to fall in love.

Cleevs was traded to the Bethesda Barracudas a year later, causing a heartbreaking separation. Ever since, they’ve skated around the problem with occasional stolen nights together and brief vacations under the guise of “friends,” but two years of living apart have taken their toll.

As the holiday approaches, Drew and Cleevs decide things have to change. Still, with their careers and two professional hockey teams in the way, how can they score the game-winning goal and save everything they cherish most?

If you like fierce love, low-angst, a smallish age gap, exciting hockey, and a steely determination to make things work—not to mention enough steam to fog up all your windows and a fantastic HEA—this is the book for you.

Nothing put me out like boring, late-night TV, so I climbed into bed and turned on the set. Relaxing back into the pillows, I ignored the talk show and thought about coming out. There was no reason not to since the league was welcoming gay players with open arms. Todd had already told people he was gay, and I needed to man up and do it too. Then we’d be able to make life a lot simpler, not to mention more rewarding, by coming out as a couple. I knew Todd loved me but wasn’t sure he was ready for that. He always changed the subject when I tried to bring it up. We had been committed for years, and I planned to talk to him at Christmas and see what he thought about taking the next step in our relationship. After a loud, frustrated groan, I turned on my side and considered jacking off, but I was too tired. If I could get Todd on the phone in the morning, maybe we’d do it together.

Snowflakes bounced off the back of my neck, leaving an icy burn behind. I pulled my coat tighter and hunched over against the wind. God only knew why we’d rented a cabin in the woods instead of going to the Caribbean, but I couldn’t wait to get inside. Todd already had a fire going, and I needed to thaw out. Odd beeping sounds made me walk faster; electronic noises in the middle of the woods had to be bad news.

“Drew, wake up.”

“Mm.”

“Drew?”

“What the fuck?” I yelled, sitting bolt upright.

“Easy, babe. It’s me.”

A man sat on the edge of the bed, silhouetted in moonlight. Two buttons were undone at the top of his fitted blue shirt, revealing a patch of pale skin that made my breath quicken. He had a beautiful angular face with sunken cheeks and a strong jaw covered by the perfect amount of stubble. His deep-set dark eyes glimmered with mischief, and his black hair was swept away from his forehead. He’d had a haircut since I saw him last, and the new style suited him.

I took a deep breath as warmth spread through my chest. “You’re a sight for sore eyes. I’ve been missing you so bad.”

“Missed you too.” His voice was soft and deep.

“I texted you twice. You didn’t answer.”

“Wanted to surprise you.”

“How’d you work it out? Aren’t you guys flying to Montreal tomorrow?”

His lips curved upward, and he took his time tracing a finger down my cheek and across my chin. “Told them I had to go see my dads for something important. Said I’d meet the team at the hotel in Montreal tomorrow night.”

“Smart.” I caressed his sides, impressed as always by the hard muscles there. They met at the front in the kind of abs most men only dream about having. “Did you warn your dads in case someone calls?”

“Of course.” He leaned forward to kiss my nose. “Pops said he was tired of lying for me and I should make an honest man out of you.”

“Okay.” I couldn’t stop the grin that worked its way across my face.

“But enough…” He kissed my right cheek. “Talking…” He pressed his warm lips against mine for a heartbeat or two. “Especially…” He licked the corner of my mouth. “About my dads.” He nibbled my lower lip and finally gave me a proper kiss.

When he wrapped his arms around me and slipped his tongue into my mouth, I didn’t even pretend to resist. Not until every nerve in my body screamed for more did I pull back. “Surely you didn’t come all this way just to kiss me. I need a lot more than kisses.”

He growled and crawled on top of me. “Exactly what I was thinking.”

Monthly MM Romance Round-up

Since MM Romance is a genre I read a fair bit of but don’t always publish a blog post for my reviews, I thought I might do a monthly round-up of any I have read for those who are interested.

This month’s round-up is quite a big one.

I listened to the audiobook version of Bossy by N.R Walker. I really enjoyed this fun romance. I enjoyed the narrator, Glen Lloyd too, (I’m very picky about my narrators) and will be looking for more read by him. N.R. Walker has made two really likeable characters who worked so well together and their interactions always had me smiling. Lots of sexy scenes in this one.

Sparrow (#2 Rebel Sky Ranch) by Kelly Fox

I absolutely loved book #1 Goodnight, and while this didn’t live up to my expectations after the first book, I did still enjoy it and will definitely be reading book #3 Navarro.

This is a case of Sparrow, a horse trainer and rescuer having an opinion of the rodeo and rodeo riders that might not be true these days, or at least not for the majority of people. He takes an instant dislike to Luke who is a rodeo star because of his prejudice towards the industry and from an accident he saw Luke have while he was there.

Sparrow was actually quite rude and unprofessional when Luke arrives at Rebel Sky Ranch looking for a place to work and recover from his injuries and to lay low after being outed after the accident. Sure Luke had a swagger to him, but he set out to prove he wasn’t who Sparrow thought he was and Sparrow just kept on writing him off.

When these two finally sort things out, I started to really enjoy both characters and enjoyed the way they were with each other.

Luke hasn’t had it easy, his parents rate very low on my scale of human beings, writing him off because he is gay and then his mother using him for all she can get financially. He’s also come from an abusive relationship and feels ashamed that he allowed himself to get treated the way he did.

Both characters have things to work out so that they can make a go of what could be something special. I love the characters that make up the found family at Rebel Sky Ranch and enjoy seeing them expand.

I’m looking forward to book #3

Sledge & Claw by Jennifer Cody

Based around the main character Lex who is an investigator for IDIA – the Inter-dimensional Immigration Agency. There are beings of all different types that come from numerous planets and dimensions, if it can be imagined, Jennifer will imagine it. Lex is the best at what he does, other than his mentor, and that is debatable depending on who you speak to. Lex has a problem, someone is setting him up and one of the office agents, Gillian Roberts decides she doesn’t trust him and she’s going to start her own investigation into him. Lex has plenty of need-to-know secrets and he is also cursed in some awful ways. What starts as a pain-in-the-ass agent following him where she shouldn’t be turns into a new team when Lex decides he’s going to take Gillian on as his trainee, unheard of since she is human. I didn’t like Gillian much when I first met her, but she grew on me as the story developed and I’m really looking forward to seeing how she goes with her training.

Code Red by N.R. Walker

I read this in June 2021 but I was looking for something to listen to with a specific narrator Nick J Russo and figured since I really enjoyed the book I’d give this a go. I do struggle with American narrators, but Nick does do a good job of narrating this book and I enjoyed it just as much this time around as when I read it last year,

We get a good look at the toll being famous, especially from a young age, can take on the people involved. Maddox is struggling with anxiety which he has been doing a good job of hiding for a while now. Roscoe has been his manager for years and has been falling for him for at least half of that time. When Maddox needs him emotionally, and he offers his support, this is the catalyst for the change in the dynamics of their relationship.

This is a relationship that is against all the rules, but the feelings they have for each other stop them from wanting to follow the rules anymore. I loved Maddox and the way he would ambush Roscoe when he was trying to be strong and keep their relationship professional, and I loved the way Roscoe unknowingly touched Maddox, whether it be on the arm or his lower back, offering support and his presence. Their friendship and attraction were a great foundation for their romantic relationship.

Crew (#1 Murphy Contracting) by Jamie Luther

I really liked Crew and Rogan, both as individual characters and as a couple. Poor Crew, after having a massive crush on his best friend’s dad, he then starts to develop serious feelings towards him, it doesn’t help that the attraction he feels isn’t one-sided.

I liked that Rogan considered his son Ace’s feelings about how a relationship with Crew might make him feel, but at the same time, Ace is an adult now and surely Rogan can start to put his own happiness first.

The sexual tension between Crew and Rogan created a strong pull between them, as well as being Ace’s dad, Rogan is also his boss, (way to complicate things). As much as they fight it, you know there is going to come a time where they give in to the pull and then things really heat up. It’s a sexually frustrated journey for these two to get together, but the waiting and pining was worth it.

Ace has his own issues with his and Crew’s other best friend Hux and because of this his mood is up and down, (doesn’t he know open communication is the only way to go). I am guessing that we will get to see Ace work out his own frustrations in book #2 and I’m looking forward to seeing where Jamie Luther takes us if the end of this book is an example of how things are going to go down.

Rogan and Crew made a really sweet couple and I look forward to seeing how they are going down the track in future books (they’d have to remain side characters surely)

Never Trust a Guy With Fangs (#1 Covens of Eaton Falls) by Mia Monroe

Never Trust a Guy With Fangs was such a good read, I actually read it twice as I didn’t write my review straight away and wanted to refresh my mind and ended up rereading the whole novel.

I love Leo who is a witch, he’s a little bit sassy, knows what he wants but has a vulnerability about him too. Augustus is the head vampire of his coven and is extremely likeable too, he’s lived a long time, seen a lot and experienced a lot of loss during his 2500 years.

The attraction between these two was hot, but fun too, Leo and his sassy ways made it fun, he just wouldn’t give up when Augustus said they couldn’t be together, for many reasons, the treaty between the witches and vampires being a big reason.

Fire in the Ice by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood

This was a sweet, low angst read that I really enjoyed. I haven’t read the first in this series but will be going back to remedy that to see how Nick and Jacob get together.

In Fire in the Ice we get Kevin and Tyler’s story, they knew each other in school and stayed in touch for years, Kev always had a huge crush on Tyler, but Tyler thought he was too you, and he was in love with NIck anyway. (Tyler and Nick’s story is in a novella which I haven’t read either).

When this story starts Tyler has been traded to the Bethesda Barracudas, Kevin and Nick’s team and while Nick is happy to be able to play with Tyler again, Kev is not. Their friendship was seen by both very differently and Tyler’s decision to not keep up the communication between them has led to Kev feeling pretty hurt.

After the initial passive/aggressive behaviour from Kevin, the two eventually sit down and communicate and from then on love is on the cards. I loved that they communicated how they felt, that they weren’t afraid to show each other how they felt and that because of their past history they were comfortable with each other and pet names came easily (I can’t say I really liked the whole giving their dicks a name, but each to their own).

Night & Day by Rachel Ember

I originally read this as part of a newsletter serial and really enjoyed it, this full version has been tweaked a bit and was an enjoyable read. I liked that there is no angst, the main characters communicate well with only a small hiccup along the way to achieving their happy ending. I thought it ended slightly differently in the serial, so I was waiting for that, but I may have mixed my books up, regardless, the ending was a good one.

The blurb was a bit confusing, having read the original version and now this one, Ty’s parents definitely didn’t have their act together in any way, shape or form and he constantly worries about his sisters, especially the youngest who is still at home. Ty has felt responsible for taking care of his sisters since they were young and he’s put his life on hold for them, never really having a dream or a plan about where his own life is heading once they don’t need him anymore. I really felt for him in this regard, it would be a tough thing to take on that sort of responsibility.

I liked Jonathan a lot, I loved how he was trying his best with his new baby after the mother ran out on them and I liked seeing him become happier once Ty was in his and Isabel’s life.

This is an easy read with a small amount of drama and a HEA.

Frat Wars: Masters of Mayhem (#2 Frat Wars) by Saxon James

I really enjoyed Robbie and Brandon’s story, there was a great deal of humour throughout and I loved the interactions between these two.

I enjoyed this more than book one, possibly because there were fewer pranks and there seemed to be more connection between these guys, probably because they were already friends. I also liked that Robbie was secure in his quest to explore his sexuality and was just, it is what it is, no need for drama. That Robbie wanted to explore this with one of his Frat brothers was sweet and understandable in that he felt safe with these guys and was secure he wouldn’t be judged. I thought the way that Brandon and Robbie decided to dive into the experiment after two very hot kisses was sweet too and the fact they were able to communicate, for the most part how they were feeling about it all was a bonus. I’m never a fan of miscommunication or lack of communication being used to create unnecessary drama, and in this novel, there was none of that.

No More Secrets (#2 Zone Defence) by Becca Seymour

I loved Sutton and Jayden, and I loved their story. Following on from Ryan and Nate’s story in book 1 No Take Backs, Sutton and Jayden’s kiss has created a massive rift in their friendship and Jayden has set off to Australia to have a break and catch up with Ryan and Nate. When he has an accident, Sutton jumps on a plane to see his friend.

Oh, I loved the way these guys ended up getting together, what starts as a fake engagement, becomes a real fake relationship and then a real relationship. I loved how they (mostly) communicated really well with each other as they were working through all of their changing feelings.

There was humour and sweetness galore, low angst and it was a really enjoyable read as these two guys navigated their friendship and their romantic relationship combined with their pro basketball careers. It wasn’t always smooth sailing and I liked that, I liked that they both struggled with different aspects of the way this changed not only their relationship but how they saw themselves, but it wasn’t too challenging for them to work things out and it didn’t drag on creating unnecessary angst.

I am really looking forward to more in this series.

The Kiss of His Blade by Romeo Alexander

This was a bit of a slow start while the scene was set up, but after that it was non stop action and attraction.

I thoroughly enjoyed this latest book by Romeo Alexander. Tristan, a professional hitman with a code of honour is required to too take out Dane, a retired marine who is supposedly using a charity to cover for weapons dealing.

I really liked both of these characters, they were both tortured by their past and their circumstances and when things don’t go to plan, the attraction between them is explosive.

As they work together to uncover who set them up and who the bad guys are, they both discover things about themselves and form an unbreakable bond.

I enjoyed June, Tristan’s offside who managed to snark her way into his closed off heart.

An unputdownable read once the action starts.

All Inclusive (#2 California Crush) by Mia Monroe

I enjoyed returning to Hillcrest Hideaway, I liked that it started where Extended Stay finished and we get to see how well the work Atlas, Rome and the staff from the hotel turns the fortune of the hotel around.

I really liked both our main characters in this one, Milo and Archer were both adorable and their friendship was great. While I don’t mind a slow burn romance, this was a bit too slow to start burning, especially because I felt that the self-doubts of both our characters and their hidden feelings for the other, and their inner thoughts were a little too repetitive for my tastes and seeing as they were best friends, I felt they really should have been able to talk to each other about the harder stuff a bit better. I enjoyed the secret admirer idea and loved that their friends, especially Oscar who has hidden depths (I’m looking forward to uncovering these in a future book), are willing to help these two with their surprises.

This was a really sweet read though and once they admitted their feelings for each other I really enjoyed seeing the relationship blossom.

I’m looking forward to more in this series

Extended Stay (#1 California Crush) by Mia Monroe

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the people who call Hillcrest Hideaway their home-away-from-home. I got a fleeting glimpse in the prequel novella Room Upgrade so really enjoyed getting to know them better. The staff who work at Hillcrest Hideaway are like an extended family and when their boss becomes sick and the financial state of the hotel comes to light, there are some stressful moments for them all.

I liked Atlas a lot and I liked that he took on board the worries of the staff and the wishes of his uncle. Putting his own career on hold to help out and try to get the rundown hotel back up to a standard where it can earn a proper income. Along comes Rome, fresh out of a relationship with his girlfriend of two years, this is the perfect job to get him out of the rut he is in. I really liked Rome too, he was down-to-earth and way more helpful than any tradesman I’ve ever had do jobs for me, and he dives straight in to help out Atlas and Hillcrest.

These two became fast friends and I enjoyed seeing the relationship bloom and subtly change as they both spent time with each other at work and out of work. There was no angst as they explored their new feelings towards each other and though this is my preference if you like angst, you won’t find any here. There was communication and a willingness to take a risk on both sides.

I’m looking forward to spending more time at Hillcrest and in California.

Room Upgrade (#0.5 California Crush) by Mia Monroe

I enjoyed this short prequel introducing us to some of the characters from Hillcrest Hideaway. Cato a guest at the hotel catches his boyfriend cheating and decides to jump in and chase away his blues with one of the staff, Tigo. It was short and sweet and I’m looking forward to catching up with them as secondary characters in the rest of the series.

Promote (#3 Shattered Pawns) by Jennifer Cody

Book 3 in the Shattered Pawns series continues to feed us information from the previous two novels (you need to read in order), adding on to what we experienced in the previous two books, we also get to know Ryan aka The Queen of Houston and Kim Aka The King and Overseer of The Hub. I really liked both of these characters, and it was good to see how they got together.

Their Dom/Sub dynamics was an interesting one, I can’t say it was my favourite of the different relationship dynamics of the two series, but I did enjoy seeing how it worked for both Ryan and Kim and what each got from the dynamic. I loved that Ryan could see Kim for who he was, really see him in ways no one else had ever done and how Kim responded to Ryan being able to see him.

I liked learning about Ryan’s background and how his species of Titan Pixie came about. I loved his reaction when he found out who one of his parents was, it really did show what a beautiful heart he has.

Finding out who the man in the mirror was put a spin on things I wasn’t expecting and I’m really looking forward to the final book in this series where we find out how he came to be how he was and find out more about the relationship he has with Den.

I cannot emphasize how good this series is and how much I can’t wait until Shah Mat comes out later this year!

Sapphire Sunset (#1 Sapphire Cove) by C. Travis Rice

What a great introduction to both this author and this series. I adored both of the MCs, Connor and Logan.

When these two meet the attraction is instant, when Logan shuts down anything happening with Connor I was holding back tears for them both, but I could really feel Connor’s hurt and my heart hurt for him, he’d put himself out there and got kicked to the kerb.

When it comes time for them to meet again 5 years down the track, I was reading with my fingers crossed the whole time. Two people from such different backgrounds, but who after 5 years had not let go of the connection they shared for that one night, and who were still instantly aware of each other, I could only hope that as things spiralled back and forward and as the dramas around Sapphire Cove unfolded and played out, that Connor and Logan could manage to create something wonderful between them. While both Logan and Connor came from different backgrounds, both carried their own baggage given to them by their families, in learning to love each other, they both needed to look at their pasts and put down the baggage and see it for what it is.

Until next month, happy reading.

New Release Book Review: Fire in the Ice by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

The sad part about their blossoming relationship was that they had to keep it a secret from their friends and teammates. The NHL and its fans have become more tolerant of LGBT+ players, but it seems two players on the same team being in a relationship might be too much. There was plenty of secrecy, drama and worry about being found out and then when they are found out, everything comes to a head.

I liked that the majority of their team and the hierarchy were supportive of their relationship, some of the behaviours, well, one in particular shocked me, but mostly everyone was great. I’m not sure how true to life this is in the hockey (or sports) world, but I like that in fiction it can play out the way I wish it would in the real world.

I enjoyed the guys’ parents hitting it off the way they did, there were some amusing scenes with Tyler’s dad and Kev’s mum. I also loved how supportive they all were of each other, just how a family should be.

I’m looking forward to reading Ice Angles because one of my favourite characters was Cleevs and he gets his story in this one.

New Release Book Review: Sledge & Claw (Hammer & Fist #1) by Jennifer Cody

Ever since picking up my first Jennifer Cody novel, I haven’t been able to get enough of what she writes. Every time she brings out a new release my expectations are high, Sledge and Claw did not let me down. The first in a new series, with a spin-off series already on the way to being published, this was once again a highly original story. An MM Urban fantasy with a romantic subplot, this took me on a ride that there is just no way of guessing where you are going to go. Jennifer’s world-building is second to none and I am amazed by the way her mind works, I’m also amazed after watching an interview with her (watch here) that she is a pantser, not a plotter and her books are so intricately woven together, I have no idea how she does that.

This book sets up a lot of the world-building and background for future books in the series and I loved it from start to finish. I don’t want to say much because I don’t want to give anything away that would ruin the trip you are going to take. There is violence, sex, murder, death, aliens, demons and every other being you can imagine and some you can’t, humour and so much more in this novel.

I can’t wait for book #2 Brick & Brass and also for the spin-off novel Inferno (Hammer & Fist: Geminatus #1).

* Authors note: Sledge and Claw is an MM Urban Fantasy with triggers for the horrors of slave trafficking, & consent issues.

Lex: I work, I sleep, I fuck. That’s what I do.

My alphabet soup agency recruited me because of my unique blend of magic and innate talent, but those come with a steep price and it’s getting harder to pay with every investigation.
I never thought Knoxville would be the place that kills me, but between someone targeting me to get me fired (or start a war; could go either way), taking on a naive new trainee, and investigating a non-human trafficking ring, it looks like I’m about to bite off more than I can chew.

The question is, can I figure out what’s going on before it all blows up in my face?

Sledge and Claw is a 65k MM Urban Fantasy that’s going to hit your dark trope buttons without causing too much emotional angst. Come along for an adventure with *Found Family *Dark Hero *Badass Heroine *Interesting Pets *Aliens *Weird Aliens *So Many Aliens *Magic! *Cursed Magic *Mayhem! *So Much Chaos *Secret Government Agencies *Lil’ Bit O’ Voyeurism *Lil’ Bit O’ Exhibitionism

Review

I liked catching up with Chad and Bailey from book #1 Frat Wars: King of Thieves and seeing that they are going strong.

I will still never completely get the whole fraternity scene, but I am enjoying this series and am looking forward to book 3 because there are definite hints along the way about two of the characters and I’m hoping I’m on the right track.

Synopsis

Bro big or bro home.

Robbie

As social chair of Sigma Beta Psi, I’m the life of the party. It’s what I’m known for, and if it’s not fun, I’m not interested, simple as that.
I’m not someone who overthinks.
So when one of my brothers hooks up with a dude from another frat house, it catches me off guard when I can’t stop thinking about them … together.
There’s only one way for me to get this obsession out of my head and that’s by jumping in with both feet and putting it into practice.
The problem is, the one guy who’s up for the ride, is the last one I’d expect.

Brandon

Being risk manager of a frat house is nobody’s idea of a good time. My brothers get annoyed when I put a damper on their plans, and wrangling drunken frat brothers isn’t how I pictured my Saturday nights of senior year.
I’m bored.
In a rut.
Study, frat duties, planning for the future.
When is it my turn to let loose for a moment?
So when my dumb-as-bricks frat bro is scoping out the house for a little experimenting fun, I throw out the offer like it isn’t the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever considered.
I never imagined I’d actually enjoy it.

Audiobook Promo Tour: Excerpt & Giveaway: Fire in the Ice by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Fire in the Ice By Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Narrated by Nick J. Russo Publisher: Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Release Date: 3/14/2022 Length: 8 hours 19 minutes Heat Level: 3 – Some Sex

Pairing: Male/Male Genre: Romance, Contemporary Gay Romance, Sports Romance Tropes: Hockey, Jock/Jock, Teammates, Second Chances, Friends-to-Lovers

What if love threatened to destroy everything you’d worked for?

Hockey right winger Tyler Jensen isn’t thrilled to get the news he’s been traded to the Bethesda Barracudas. The team may be red-hot in the rankings, but there’s someone there he’d rather not have to see every day.

Defenseman Kevin Moore is one of the top-rated rookies in the country. He’s living the dream playing for the Barracudas—until he hears that his old high-school crush Tyler is joining the team. Ty was once everything Kev wanted, but their age difference got in the way. Tyler decided a three-year gap was too much and left Kevin behind.

In Bethesda, Tyler doesn’t take long to notice that Kevin has grown up into precisely the kind of man he can’t resist—brawny, brainy, and beautiful. Kev feels the pull too, and as the men become closer, they work hard to keep their budding relationship secret. Professional hockey may be welcoming gay players now, but Ty and Kev aren’t sure management would like the idea of two Barracudas taking teamwork to an entirely new level.

As the playoffs loom, news of their romance gets out. Ty and Kev, caught in a storm of controversy that threatens to destroy them, need a power play to save their careers. How will they find one before it’s too late?

Fire in the Ice delivers on the promise that second chances can work and dreams can come true. If you like exciting hockey, plenty of humour, a beautiful HEA, new adults, young athletes, and enough heat to burn down the house, this book is for you.

Excerpt

“Want some snacks?” I asked. “Got to have snacks with a movie.”

“Wonder what they have?”

We found the room service menu but decided we were still too full from dinner to order appetizers.

Ty called downstairs. “Any chance you could bring us some popcorn and candy?”

“And sodas,” I added. “Tell them to bring sodas.”

They delivered our order quickly, and we set up camp on my bed. Instead of watching a current release, we chose the old movie Revenge of the Nerds. Room service had brought an enormous bowl of popcorn, and our hands brushed repeatedly as we dipped in for more. We sat close together, and Tyler’s heat radiated off him. After finishing the snacks, we lay down. We weren’t touching, but just as our hands had found each other in the popcorn bowl, our legs, arms, and hips made frequent contact as we shifted around.

I eventually tired of the movie and decided some conversation would be good. “How are you liking the Barracudas?”

“A lot more than I expected to. The guys are all great, and we’ve clicked as a team. It’s almost like Birky and I have been playing with you all year.”

“I agree.” I found the TV remote, turned down the volume, and then stretched. My arm bumped into Tyler’s, and not feeling like moving it, I left it there. “You’ve been playing really well since you got to Bethesda.”

He pressed his arm against mine. “Think it has much to do with you, Nick, and me playing together before?”

“I’m sure that’s a factor. We were good in prep school. We’ve all improved our skills since then, but we’re still the same people.”

He turned on his side toward me, his knee bumping my leg in the process. “We were good friends in prep school, but we can be even better now as something else.” He moved his arm and traced a finger against the side of my hand. “I like you a lot, Kev. I always did, but things weren’t right for us a few years ago. Nicky and I were breaking up, and you were just coming out of kidhood.”

I snickered. “Kidhood? Is that a word?”

“Is now.”

“I’m not a kid anymore.”

“Believe me, I’ve noticed.”

Things went quiet. The movie droned softly in the background, and just as I was trying to think of something to say, Tyler took my hand. I loved the warmth of his skin and the way our workout calluses scraped against each other. I didn’t even consider pulling away; Tyler Jensen wanted to hold my hand, and I liked it.

Monthly MM Romance Round-up

Since MM Romance is a genre I read a fair bit of but don’t always publish a blog post for my reviews, I thought I might do a monthly round-up of any I have read for those who are interested.

Sink or Swim (Shore Leave #2) by Annabeth Albert

I absolutely loved book 2 in the Shore Leave series, Sink or Swim was another winner for me, after Sailor Proof which I also loved, I was really looking forward to Calder’s story.

Calder is a big gambler and when he wins a ski cabin in a poker game and heads up there to see what it’s like, he finds out he’s been taken for a ride in a divorce dispute with Felix’s ex-husband.

Calder and Felix make a fabulous couple, and despite both not wanting anything at all when they first meet, that changes when they both realise what they’ve been missing and what could be. They both had lots of issues to work through, but I liked that they communicated and didn’t get bogged down in misunderstandings. I loved that Calder was the braver one, willing to fight for what he wanted all the way through, realising that despite not looking for love or ‘feelings’, what he had found was worth keeping. Their intimate relationship builds and is different in the bedroom compared to many, I really appreciated that Felix and Calder were so on the same page and that they both understood each sexual relationship is unique to that couple. I could really feel the closeness and emotions that passed between these to MC’s.

Felix’s nieces, Madeline and Charlotte were both great additions to the story and added a lot to their relationship. I especially enjoyed Charlotte, she was such a wonderful character and I felt I got to know her better than her quieter sister.

I did like catching up with Derrick & Arthur and seeing how their relationship was going. This can easily be read as a standalone, but you’ll be missing out if you don’t read Sailor Proof too. I look forward to seeing what Annabeth Alberth brings us next.

Thanks to NetGalley and Carina Adores for a digital copy in return for an honest review.

The Trouble With Trying To Date A Murderer by Jennifer Cody

I didn’t quite know what to expect with this, it was definitely a unique concept and being a Jennifer Cody novel that is a given, and the verdict, I LOVED this so much. Full of humour and heart, I just adored Romily (who wouldn’t) is non-verbal and I fell for Fox too as he fell for Romily. I loved how Romily who was non-verbal, was able to convey so much with just a look and loved that Fox got him straight away. With body parts flying and blood getting Romily’s clothes messy, these two were made for each other, and as Romily notes from the get-go, Fox is his ‘Future Husband’ for sure. This book is too good to give anything much away, so I recommend you pick it up and find out all about how hard it is trying to date a murderer. This was a great read and I can’t wait for more.

Egotistical Puckboy by Eden Finley & Saxon James

Egotistical Puckboy (Puckboys #1) was a really enjoyable start to a new series. I really enjoyed these authors’ previous collaboration with the CU Hockey series and this new one didn’t disappoint.

Wicked Heat by Ella Frank

Wicked Heat is book 1 of 2 about MCs Ryan and Jameson in a 4 book series. Wicked heat is a spin-off series from a couple of Ella Frank’s other series, I’ve met several of the characters before and now want to go back and meet the ones in the books I’ve missed.

Ryan, a sunshiney, outwardly outgoing PA for Prime-time news anchor Alexander (from the Prime TIme series), is a character I immediately loved. Jameson a firefighter (at the same precinct that Keiran from Dare to Try series recently left) who prefers to keep himself to himself and not make friends or have relationships is taciturn in his nature towards everyone.

Code Blue by N.R Walker

Wow, I didn’t want to put this novel down. Following on from Code Red, this book focuses on band member Jeremy and Atrous’ head of security Steve. The story is told from Steve’s perspective and what a story it is. I really enjoyed Code Red, but I enjoyed Code Blue even more. And the fact it’s over 400 pages is just awesome, I do enjoy a long book I can really sink my teeth into.

Steve is gay but has kept this undercover, he’s had a thing for Jeremy for a while, but Jeremy is straight and why would he look at Steve, except he does and Jeremy is confused and angry about what he is feeling and he takes it out on Steve for a while as well as some self-destructive behaviour, as he tries to work through what is going on. Oh, I did love these two, they worked so well together, I loved Jeremy to bits and Steve was my hero.

Capture (Shattered Pawns #2) by Jennifer Cody

I am loving this series just as much as The Diviner’s Game series which is set in the same universe with many of the same characters. Capture, the second book in the Shattered Pawns series was brilliant, I really don’t know how Jennifer Cody manages to come up with the storylines, theme and plot, so amazingly twisted and intricately orchestrated, each story though happening at the same time frame, building on to the previous one, giving us more information without rehashing everything that happened with the other characters.

I adored Qis and Monet, these two were definitely made for each other and though I don’t understand the whole pain/pleasure/comfort kink, I know there’s a kink out there for everyone, and Monet was made for showing Qis what it was he needed. There are some very hot and interesting and kinky sex scenes that had me wondering whether they were actually possible, I’m assured they definitely are and I have a fabulous imagination so I didn’t need to check it out for myself.

I love the whole Aquino family and enjoy my time with them every novel. You do need to have read Pass (read my review here) before reading Capture for maximum enjoyment as they each build on to the story. There are gods, fighting, intrigue and danger for everyone and these guys are going to learn who they really are and what they are capable of when it all hits the fan.

I can’t wait for book 3 when we find out how it all ends and we get to see how Kim and Ryan get together.

Restored Ruins by G.R Lyons

This turned out to be a fun and original read which pulled at my emotions at times and had me grinning at others. In my first book by G.R Lyons, I enjoyed his writing and I enjoyed the characters and the world he has created in this new paranormal/speculative fiction MMM romance series Gentleman Hackers.

I really liked Connor, a young man who has been rejected all his life, he is of a different race, one who has the gift of telepathy/telekinesis and also the ability to change himself on a genetic level. Connor was a lonely soul who hid behind his computers as a way of protecting himself from more rejection. He also had a fun sassy side to him which comes out after he is kidnapped by Brendan after he finds he has hacked into his webcam.

My Review

While the romance and chemistry between Connor and Logan were wonderful, the villains in the story were anything but. Connor’s uncle, Rodney, who from the get-go was an awful person and a wronged widow looking for someone to blame, these characters showed how easy it is to destroy people’s lives and businesses through blackmail and the power of social media.

There was plenty going on throughout this novel and there wasn’t a moment where I felt I was bored at all, I couldn’t stop reading, needing to know what was going to happen next and whether they were going to be able to pull both the hotel and their relationship out of the fire.

I am really looking forward to the next book in the Sapphire Cove series.

Excerpt

“Wow.” Logan’s voice echoed through the rocky chamber.
Here, the sounds of the ocean surf softened into something that was more like a
gurgling brook. What whitecaps the cave’s mouth captured were filtered down into
something frothy and inviting amidst the labyrinth of low rocks within. The basic security
lights at foot level threw a soft golden light across the metal struts that secured the rock
ceiling overhead.
“I used to come here all the time as a kid with my friends,” Connor said nervously.
“There’re all kinds of caverns back here we used to play and hide in before my mom
found out and busted us. She still has no idea they don’t go that deep. She still thinks
you could get lost in here. But I’ve got an excellent sense of direction.”
“Do you?”
“Yeah, I usually know where things are headed.”
“Makes sense, I guess. Your life’s kinda laid out for you, right? You’ll probably run this
place someday, right? Heir apparent and all that.”
“Oh, God. Do they still call me the prince?” Connor turned, resting his butt against the
guardrail so he could focus on Logan.
“Kinda.”
“Is that a good thing? Should I be annoyed by that?”
“Better to be the prince than a peasant, I guess,” Logan said.
“Are those really the only two choices?”
Logan laughed, but there was relief in it. As if Connor’s snarky response had shined a
light on possibilities he hadn’t seen before now. “I guess not.”
“Whatever. I’ll let it go.”
Silence then, save for the gurgling of the sea pushing its way past them and deeper into
the cave.
Connor rested his elbows on the rail on either side of him, an attempt to look casual
even though the sight of Logan leaning against the cave wall, hands in his pockets,
studying Connor with a half smile made Connor feel welded in place. “All right, your
turn.”
“My turn for what?” Logan asked.
“I told you mine, and my grandpa’s. What’s your magic moment?”
“Okay.” Logan straightened. “So if I remember correctly, it’s like a moment when you’re
doing something you love and you feel the most satisfied by it. Is that right?”
“Exactly.” Connor was thrilled that Logan had listened so closely.
“Well, my life is kind of starting over, so I’m kind of figuring out what it is I love to do.
Kickboxing’s up there, but that’s more of a fast and furious kind of thing, and the high is
mostly when I’m done. Not sure there’s really a magic hour there. There was some stuff
about the Marines that I loved, especially once I was a staff sergeant and I was in the
zone for gunnery sergeant. But a lot of it was tough, and a lot to hold.”
“I’m sure.”
When Logan started toward him through the shadows, Connor’s breath caught. His feet
felt planted to the boards, and the sides of his face got tingly and hot.
“So if I had to pick,” Logan said, “I’d pick this one.”
“Walking rounds?”
“No. I’d pick the moment when I’m finally all alone with a guy who drives me wild, and I
know we’re about to kiss, but I’m not sure when. So there’s this tension in the air, and I
can feel it. Everywhere.”
They were inches apart now, so close Connor had to look up at him to maintain eye
contact.
“And we’re both circling, waiting for the right moment. And I’m trying to take it kinda slow
because I know one little touch”—Logan gently grazed Connor’s cheek with the side of
one finger—“and it might turn into a lot more than a kiss. But first, there’s a promise to
be kept.”
“What promise is that?” Connor asked in a squeaky whisper.
“I believe you promised me a dance.”
“Or you promised me one.”
“Either way, seems like time.”

New Release Book Review: Code Blue by N.R Walker

On top of this emotional confusion surrounding his feelings and attraction towards Steve, he has a medical issue that could change everything and a management team who are less than impressive, Atrous and the security team is dealing with a crazy-ass stalker who has them all under a lot of pressure, but especially Jeremy because they are especially fixated on him. Steve takes on personal security for Jeremy and in this forced proximity, things between them come to a head.

Steve is hiding things from his past, traumas that just might have a bearing on their future. There is so much going on in this novel that it needed 400+ pages in order to tell it all. There isn’t a moment where I got bored, it rolled smoothly from one scene to the next.

I really did love this book and definitely recommend it along with Code Red, this duology is one of my favourites.

Thanks to N.R Walker for a digital copy in return for an honest review.

Blurb for CODE BLUE
