Book Release Tour: Review , Excerpt & Giveaway: Winter Dreams by Marie Sexton

22-168 Marie Sexton Winter Dreams

Winter Magic, Book 2

What happens when a player gets played?

Actor Dylan Frasier is known as one of the biggest playboys in Hollywood, infamous for seducing men and women alike. He’s also half in love with his two best friends. Unfortunately, Jason and Ben are madly in love with each other, leaving Dylan the odd man out. When Ben suggests an extended Christmas vacation at a resort modeled after his favorite 80s TV show, Dylan reluctantly agrees. Sure, his heart breaks a bit every time he sees them together, but it’s a vacation in the Bahamas. How bad can it be?

At first, the resort seems like any other. Dylan plans to work on his tan, get laid, and hunt for Hollywood’s most in-demand director – not necessarily in that order. Then he meets Connor, a tennis instructor still hurting from a bad breakup. Connor knows Dylan’s reputation and refuses to be seduced. Dylan sees Connor as just another conquest, but this tropical island isn’t as mundane as it appears. It has its own kind of magic, and it’s about to make things interesting.

Review

I recently read book #1 Winter Oranges and I loved it, I was keen to see Dylan find his HEA in Winter Dreams and the story Marie Sexton weaved didn’t disappoint.

Set on a resort island modelled on Fantasy Island the 80s TV show, there is again a touch of fantasy wound in Dylan and Connor finding each other and getting their happy ending. It isn’t all smooth sailing, with the island invading their dreams and both having their doubts that it could mean more than at most a fling, but as playboy Dylan sets out to woo Connor, the game plan changes and new dreams are put in motion.

I adored Ben, one of the main characters from Winter Oranges who was trapped in a snow globe for over a hundred years, he is so sweet and adorable and his enthusiasm for everything shines through. He also shows what a good friend he has become to Dylan and how much support he has to give him, he also shows how much he truly sees Dylan underneath the mask he puts on for the world. Jason, Dylan’s best friend I was disappointed in, he had such low expectations of his friend and I was disappointed in his lack of support and continual disbelief he could be more than just a playboy.

Dylan definitely does a lot of growing once he meets Connor, he starts off as a selfish playboy who has a reputation, but through his meeting Connor and getting to know him, he really does grow into a nicer and stronger person. Both Dylan and Connor have things from the past that taint their outlook on love, but Dylan’s was a traumatic past that has echoed through his whole life, I really felt for him when he started to open up and tell Connor what had happened, and was pleased he was able to see he needed help. I loved the connection Dylan and Connor formed, and if Connor hadn’t insisted on taking things slowly, this probably wouldn’t have happened. It really did form a good foundation for their relationship.

I adored this couple.

Excerpt

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It must be true. God knows it could only be insanity that made me agree to this vacation. Why else would I spend the next thirty-one days with Jason and Ben knowing it’ll result in nothing but heartache? I love them both so much it hurts. Watching them together is like feeling my heart slowly shatter over and over again, and yet I can’t stand to stay away from them either.

So here I am, on an airplane with them two days after Thanksgiving, bound for a tropical resort, Christmas be damned. We’d debated flying first class, but we were already spending a fair amount on this month-long vacation, so we settled for business class instead. Still not enough legroom for my six-foot-one body, but the drinks are free, so I’m not complaining.

“I’m so excited,” Ben says. “Can you believe we’re actually going to Fantasy Island?” He’s sitting between Jason and I on the airplane, having volunteered for the middle seat. Even now, almost two years after his miraculous appearance in Jason’s life, Ben comes across all innocence and bright-eyed enthusiasm. He’d sent off for a paper brochure from the resort because he said reading it on his phone was “dumb.” Watching him flip through it, I wonder if he’ll ever become as jaded as the rest of us.

I hope not.

Jason Walker is a child star turned teen heartthrob turned reluctant B-movie regular who’s sick of his failing career. So he gives up Hollywood for northern Idaho, far away from the press, the drama of LA, and the best friend he’s secretly been in love with for years.

There’s only one problem with his new life: a strange young man only he can see is haunting his guesthouse. Except Benjamin Ward isn’t a ghost. He’s a man caught out of time, trapped since the Civil War in a magical prison where he can only watch the lives of those around him. He’s also sweet, funny, and cute as hell, with an affinity for cheesy ’80s TV shows. And he’s thrilled to finally have someone to talk to.

But Jason quickly discovers that spending all his time with a man nobody else can see or hear isn’t without its problems—especially when the tabloids find him again and make him front-page news. The local sheriff thinks he’s on drugs, and his best friend thinks he’s crazy. But Jason knows he hasn’t lost his mind. Too bad he can’t say the same thing about his heart.

Review

I really enjoyed this, it was just the kind of light fun read I didn’t know I needed.

I did worry when in the first few pages Leon’s a**hole partner breaks up with him and is just awful, this scene caused me a bit of anxiety for what I might expect for the rest of the book. Luckily, this scene didn’t set the tone of the rest of the story, instead, it is full of fun and heart when Damon, a guy he had a fling with years before finds himself drawn into the out-there situations Leon keeps pulling him into in his goal to find love.

Leon was sweet, if not oblivious to the signals Damon was giving him, he also did everything he could to avoid conflict, hence how he found himself in the out-there situations. Damon may have messed up in the past, but when faced with the opportunity of getting a second chance with Leon, he grabs it with both hands, it doesn’t stop him from being cheeky with Leon, but he is also supportive and sweet towards him too. Leon and Damon were so good for each other, I wondered how long it would take Leon to realise what was in front of his eyes.

This was an entertaining read which left me with the feel-goods at the end.

Plenty of fish in the sea.

But what if there is no “plenty”? What if Leon Finn is a lone fish? A lone fish in a glass bowl swimming in hopeful but ultimately lonely circles forever?

Dumped and forced to retreat to his tiny-town seaside bach, it’s time for Leon to cast some lines, and quick! Prove to everyone—(*cough*) ex, mother, other ex who he’s now accidentally living with—that he’s a catch.

Only no one is biting.

It sucks, but it’s solvable.

With his trusty sewing machine and endless stash of fabric he’ll make himself into the ultimate suitor. Stitch this right up.

But as a certain someone keeps whispering in his ear, is this the right way?

Pier Pressure is a light-hearted, cheeky M/M romance with silly seaside shenanigans culminating in happily ever after. It can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt

I crouch and stare at it. “Hello.”

It wriggles its tail and swims away. A fish here means someone’s been coming regularly, to change the water and feed it. “Who’s looking after you, hmm?” My cousin Troy lives nearby, he’d be the type to buy a goldfish for his kid without asking his wife first. I can imagine him schlepping it here and regretting his stupidity every time he came by to keep it alive.

It’s stupid, but I’m ridiculously glad I’m not completely alone. Karl and I might not have had sex in six months, but he’d always shared my bed. I was used to someone being in the same room, in the same space, closest to the door. There was something comforting in it. Like, if we got murdered, they’d have to go through him first.

Wind howls around the bach, rattling the windows and whistling down the chimney. There’s the creak of a door on its hinges, and bloody hell. The bach never seemed this freaky in summer . . .

I raid my suitcase and yank on the kiddiest pyjamas I own, my fluffy ducky ones. Maybe if I look innocent enough, a murderer might think twice before offing me, giving me crucial time to—yep, that hearth shovel was coming to bed with me. And . . . and the fish. I couldn’t leave it all alone out here. The killer might . . .

Carefully, I lift the bowl, tuck it to my chest and take refuge in my room.”

I wake up to a shadow looming over me.

I scream and throw blankets into the darkened face. The shovel! Where is it? I plunge an arm down the side of my bed, between the mattress and the wall, and grope for the weapon. Nothing. And meanwhile I’m left in a frighteningly exposed, arse-up position. I forget the shovel and throw myself onto my back, hands balled at the ready.

Before me the figure is muttering something that gets lost under a thick layer of feather-down. A large hand with a vein running down the middle reaches around the duvet and with a whoosh, my cover is yanked off.

Instead of hauling arse out the window with Fishy, I’m asking the intruder to please at once remove himself from my bed chamber. Apparently, I turn into Darcy in panic—“Damon?”

Laughter. As heavy as the ocean, as warm as the dawn spilling into my room. “Well hello, Leon.”

Blog Tour, Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: When The Walls Come DownBy Harper Robson

When the Walls Come Down Cover

Hot Dam Homes, Book 2

Dylan

“Quirky.” Ugh, I hate that word. The PC term these days is ‘neuro-divergent’, but I prefer to be called autistic. It’s often a huge advantage to have a brain that works differently, but I sometimes wish it was easier to connect with other people. The things that make me different can make people want to keep their distance, and for a long time I’ve built walls around myself so no one wants to even try breaking through. Helping the sexy ER doctor renovate his house, I discover someone who wants to get closer instead of running away. I think Reed likes me because I’m a little different, not in spite of it. But the gorgeous doctor has a lot of baggage, and I worry that if he sees the parts of me I work so hard to keep under control, he’s going to turn tail and run.

Reed

I’ve overcome a lot to get to where I am as a doctor, including parents who loved their bigoted, homophobic church more than their child and an opioid addiction following years of self-loathing. I love my team in the ER, but in my personal life I prefer to fly solo. I’m comfortable behind the carefully built walls that no one, not even my best friend, gets through.

The old fixer-upper in a great neighborhood was supposed to be a side project, but I discovered pretty quickly that home renovations are not as easy as they look on TV. But when one of the sexiest men I’ve ever seen, who happens to be a contractor, shows up in my ER, he feels like the solution to all my problems. What I never expected was that while he was rebuilding my house, Dylan Campbell would be the first person who makes me want to take my walls down.

When The Walls Come Down is a steamy hurt/comfort MM Romance. It features an autistic home renovation expert, and a doctor scarred by a traumatic childhood. Two people who’ve always been outsiders figuring out how to let each other in.

Review

I really enjoyed When the Walls Come Down, it is my first read by Harper Robson and I’ll be returning to read book 1 of Hot Dam Houses very soon.

I appreciated the author giving us a neurodiverse main character, I work with people with autism and while many of the clients I work with are not high functioning, I do have a couple who are. It is nice to see that they could pick up a book and recognise bits of themselves in the main character.

I really enjoyed getting to know both Dylan and Reed, they were great characters, both with their own baggage they carried and both believing they would never find someone who would accept them for who they were.

I liked that Dylan owned his autism and for the most part communicated well with Reed about what he needed. And I liked how supportive Reed was of Dylan, I’m not sure there are many people out there who would be as easily accepting and supportive in the real world, but it is nice to hope there are.

There were some amusing moments and some moments that pulled at my emotions a bit, the story flowed well and I loved seeing them as a couple.

Thanks to GRR for providing me with a digital copy in return for an honest review.

This is an emergency though. I’m no good with social cues, but Grace sounded so jittery that even I can tell she’s freaking out.

I make it to Grace and her husband’s cute little house in record time, leaving the truck running while I rush inside. I find her in the living room, her coat half-on, wearing one boot with the other one clutched in her hand as she white-knuckles the back of her couch with the other, panting her way through what I assume is a contraction. I have no idea how I’m supposed to react, and touch isn’t something I’m super comfortable with, but I go to her, reaching out to gently rub her back.

Before she can say a word, she squeezes her eyes closed and whimpers.

“Dyl, we gotta get to the hospital. I don’t wanna have this baby in the damn car!“ She’s clearly panicking, and never in my life have I seen my sister so undone.

“It’s okay,” I say, even though I have no idea if it’s okay or not. “We’ll make it. Can you walk to the truck?”

She nods weakly, pointing to an overnight bag. “Can you grab my bag? I’m gonna need you to help me walk.”

I grab her stuff and help her out to the truck. She’s hit by another contraction, and the whimpering sounds she’s making are worse than if she was screaming at the top of her lungs.

“It’s okay, we’ll be okay,” I say, talking as much to myself as to her.

Screeching to a halt in front of the ER a few minutes later, I jump out of the truck and go tearing through the glass doors. Grace seems to be getting quieter, which is not helping my nerves.

“I need some help. There’s someone having a baby outside,” I shout as the automatic doors whoosh shut behind me.

A few nurses glance over, but no one seems to be jumping into action like I would expect.

“Please, can someone help me? There’s a baby literally being born in my truck!”

I melt into his touch, savoring a moment I thought would never come. I’d always wondered what kissing Law would feel like, and now I’m getting a taste of it. It’s sweet and eggnoggy and so very Lawson.

I’m in the best kind of shock about it, while reminding my future self to always let Lawson be in charge of the alcoholic contribution to all my eggnogs from here on out.

The kiss deepens, and slowly, I emerge out of the haze I’ve fallen into. What we’re doing hits me smack bang in the chest. But instead of freaking out, or wanting to put a stop to it, the voice inside me whispers three little words.

Go for it.

So I do. This could be the one and only time in my life I ever get to be like this with Lawson, so I intend on making the most of it.

I charge my fingers through Lawson’s silky-soft black hair. I meet the movement of his tongue with my own, but I take it up a notch. Or eight. Going slow like we have been up until this point is fine and dandy, but I really want to kiss the life out of him.

All the years of pent-up frustration and secretly pining for my best friend I’ve been carrying around find an outlet as my tongue tangles with his. Delicious sounds spill out from the sides of his mouth, like he’s surprised in the best way possible at this sudden escalation surging out of me.

I capture his face in my hands, fully taking over now. I don’t know what’s come over me, but I need this. Our tongues are dueling, my body is on fire. Every nerve ending I have is singed with pleasure I didn’t think was possible to get just from kissing.

I hope Law’s feeling the same way I am because if I can make him feel even half as good as how he’s making me feel right now, he’ll remember this kiss for the rest of his life, too.

There’s nothing but moaning and heavy breathing and sounds of the springs of our old couch creaking filling the air around us. I lose track of time, consumed by something so ravenous and deep that the intensity catches me completely off-guard.

Eventually, Lawson pulls back. I’m met with two half-hooded eyes dripping with nothing but desire and want.

For me.

It’s the hottest I’ve ever seen Lawson look.

I gently caress his puffed-out, just-been-kissed lips with my fingertips, before peppering his jaw and neck with a series of smaller kisses, nibbles, and licks. He smells so good, and he tastes even better.

I reach around to pull his hand from my neck. With our eyes locked on each other, I give his fingers three tiny presses. His eyes twinkle in recognition as he squeezes back four times.

Holy heck. I just kissed my best friend, and I think we both liked it.

Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway: Shameless Puckboy by Eden Finley & Saxon James

SHAMELESS PUCKBOY Puckboys – Book Three

by Eden Finley & Saxon James

Review

Shameless Puckboy was another enjoyable read in the Puckboys series.

I can’t say I was a big fan of Oskar to start with, though he did give me a few laughs with his pouty childishness at times. I liked Lane straight up, but can’t imagine any PR guy going to the lengths he did to stop Oskar from being cut from the team for his behaviour. But since this is fiction, I enjoyed seeing how far he did go and how they both tried to outdo each other in their opposite goals.

There was some serious chemistry between them and while Lane knew it wasn’t a good idea to pursue anything if he wanted to keep his job and his reputation, it seemed Oskar’s charms were too much to resist.

Like many characters, Oskar had underlying issues and a hidden personality that once he allowed Lane and others to see showed just what a nice guy he was and could be if he had the right inclination and support to do so.

I really enjoyed his group of friends who I’d met in previous books by these authors, and loved how they were so supportive of him and let him know he was part of their family and they wanted to know the ‘real’ him.

I’m a sucker for a HEA and enjoyed Lane and Oskar’s, I liked that Lane came out of the whole incident with Oskar with a better deal than he could have imagined and that they both proved how much they loved each other.

Synopsis

OSKAR

After a little mishap in an alleyway with CCTV, my public image needs fixing. Oops?
It might have been a stunt to get the attention of Lane Pierce, San Jose’s new PR manager, but I didn’t realize what the consequences would be when I did it. I’ve got Lane’s sole focus now in all the wrong ways.
He has designated himself as my babysitter, and while it’s fun messing with him, being bound by curfews and rules has never worked for me.
The more I push back, the more I realize what’s really on the line. My career, my future, and maybe even my heart.

LANE

Being appointed head of San Jose’s PR department was a dream come true … until I met Oskar Voyjik.
He may be San Jose royalty, but with the stunts Oskar’s been pulling, the team owner is down to his last thread of patience. Which puts me in the firing line. If I can’t turn Oskar’s entitled party boy image around, we’ll both be shown the door.
I have free rein to do whatever it takes, and it turns out whatever it takes is Oskar.
Only, the more entangled our lives become, the more I see the Oskar he’s buried deep down. The one who hurts, the one who’s sensitive and kind, the one … the one I think I’m falling for.
I can’t have him and my career, and if rumors of the professional lines I’ve crossed get out, it’s not only my dream job I can kiss goodbye; I’ll be disgraced from professional sports completely.

New Release Book Review: When the River Rises by Rachel Ember

I love this series and have been looking forward to When the River Rises (Wild Ones #5) since finishing As the Tallgrass Grows (#4) it was great to finally clear up the mystery that we first encountered in The Long Winter (#1).

I liked finally getting to meet Jake, getting to know him, and learning more about the animosity between him and his cousins. And I loved meeting Cam and getting to know him too, it seems like an unlikely match, but Cam and Jake really hit it off and have big impacts on each other.

This book is told in two timelines, the present-day and two years ago. The chapters alternate between the two with Jake telling the present-day timeline and Cam the one from two years ago. While I usually enjoy dual timeline stories and it was needed to get the whole picture, I found myself wanting to keep focusing on each one and being disappointed when I got pulled out from each timeline.

Jake has so many hidden depths and I liked how Rachel Ember slowly peeled back the layers for us to see, his story and his family situation are not one of happy families, though his uncles Bo and Dylan do a good job of making up for some of the deficits while he was growing up. All isn’t as it seems with Jake and we are left to wonder for most of the books what happened after he left Cam.

Cam’s aunt is a criminal and the reason he meets Jake in the first place when Jake is charged with keeping him safe. Cam is so far removed from the criminal world and had a nativity to him that I hoped he wouldn’t lose.

I thoroughly enjoyed When the River Rises and really hope we get to see the Chase family reunite and heal the rift that was created decades ago.

While this can be read as a stand-alone, I personally would read them in order, there are storylines that are overarching and they are all such great reads you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks to the author for a digital copy in return for an honest review.

New Release Book Review: Wonderland by Rachel Ember

Review

A second chance at love with your estranged best friend, man did Peter and Riley deserve that chance!

I really enjoy Rachel Ember’s writing and I’m so glad she has written a book in the Vino Veritas series. I really enjoyed Wonderland, everything about it made for an engaging read. I loved both Peter and Riley and was cheering them on from the get-go. As the reason for their estrangement slowly gets uncovered, I liked the way they were both able to communicate easier and forgive each other for what happened in the past. I enjoyed the chemistry and the friendship they shared.

Riley’s grandfather Gene is a character, and I enjoyed seeing the relationship between him and Riley rebuild itself and seeing Riley realise how much faith Gene was putting in him by allowing him to see how vulnerable he was and what a mess he had let his property and himself become and seeing Gene pull himself out of it with Riley and Peter’s help.

The setting of the broken-down amusement park was as much a character as the people and I enjoyed exploring it and seeing it come back to life.

I enjoyed seeing them both interact with some of the other Vino & Veritas characters I have come to know and love and I liked that they were all there to support Riley when he needed them.

About the Book:

I left Vermont on the most painful day of my life and swore I’d never go back. Meadows Park–the shuttered amusement park that’s been in my family for generations–is the home of all my finest and worst memories. They all star Peter Landry–the best friend I ever had, and the only guy I’ve ever loved.

But then my eccentric grandfather buried two million dollars on the property and couldn’t remember where.

So I’m back, and asking Peter for help. He’s an Ivy League lawyer now. Still gorgeous, and able to gut me with a single smile. And I’m still a disappointment, living in the city and washing dishes to get by. As soon as we strike off down the first sunlit path, the Meadows Park magic begins to fill my heart with yearning, lust, and most dangerous of all—dreams.

I’m secretly relieved each time the day ends, leaving us empty-handed. I know it’s wrong—without that money, we could lose the park.

But if I find the treasure, I lose the guy.

New Release Book Review: Wildfire by Garrett Leigh

Review

I was excited to hear there was going to be a new series set in the Vino and Veritas world and I loved being back there in the first book Wildfire (In Vino Veritas #1).

Oh boy, Kai and Joss, what can I say, they are both damaged and slightly broken, or that is how they see themselves, both for different reasons. Kai is struggling with PTSD after being involved with a terrible accident he could do nothing to stop, and Joss has ADHD and non-verbal Tourettes, which he has learned to live with, but wishes he liked these parts of himself better.

Joss can’t settle anywhere, he’s searching for something but has no idea what, when he turns up at Vino and Veritas to start up the kitchen for his friend, he plans on being there a few months, long enough to set things up then he can take off again for new places.

Kai is working at Vino and Veritas, hiding from life after his experience, afraid to be around people and afraid to move on from where his life has taken a detour.

These two men, wow, Garrett Leigh has done a great job of portraying their issues and really making me care about both of them. I loved Joss’s quirkiness and could understand a lot of his issues with ADD having it myself. I thought the connection they had was beautiful, the way they just got each other and accepted each other’s quirks and tried to make things easier for each other without even thinking about it; when you find someone like this it’s a once-in-a-lifetime connection. They both have a lot to work through, as individuals and as a couple, but it is so worth it.

I didn’t want to put this book down, reading through until I couldn’t keep my eyes open because I was so invested in these two men.

I loved catching up with the characters I came to know in the original series, it was like catching up with old friends and seeing how they were getting on.

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series as they become available.

About the Book

A gorgeous new sexual awakening romance with sizzling first times, snarky British banter, and off-the-charts chemistry.

Life doesn’t always pan out as you expect. When it explodes in my face, literally, an old friend offers me a place to heal and a job renovating the kitchen of Burlington’s coolest wine bar.

V&V is a chill fest. Living above it should be a blast. But I’m not built to be a social butterfly. Not anymore. I’m a damaged man.

And I’m not its target clientele.

At least, I think I’m not until I come face to face with the most beautiful human I’ve ever seen. Joss is the new chef and my roommate. He has hair like spun gold and it’s as pretty as the rest of him. Crystal blue eyes. Megawatt smile.

I can’t stop staring. Or thinking about him. He chases my nightmares away. And when he spots my crush a mile off, his solution to our chemical attraction blows my mind.

An experiment of sorts. Science. Is this sexual exploration or sex education?

Either way, Joss is only here for the summer. He’s leaving.

I can’t fall in love with him.

I can’t.

Shame my foolish heart never got the memo.

WILDFIRE is a heartfelt MM friends-to-lovers, hurt/comfort romance in the True North world, with a brooding lumbersexual, a wild-hearted chef, sweet angst and all the Vermont food. Content warning: contains mentions of depression, ADHD, suicidal ideation, and PTSD recovery.

Blog Tour: Review & Excerpt: Sapphire Spring by C. Travis Rice

Sapphire Spring, an all-new heartfelt and touching MM romance in the Sapphire Cove Series from New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice writing as C. Travis Rice, is available now!

Review

I enjoyed Sapphire Sunset (book #1), so I was looking forward to returning to Sapphire Cove and getting to know some of the other characters better. I have to say, my return was just as enjoyable as I expected.

I liked getting to know Naser who we meet briefly in book #1 and learning about his background and meeting his family. Bullied through school, those experiences have had an impact on his life and they are memories that have not really faded. I completely understood where Naser was coming from and I really empathised with him on this front. When out of the blue he bumps into one of the men who bullied him he is definitely not happy.

Mason, hmm well his life is a mess, he’s addicted to drugs and alcohol and living a life where he is not happy, dealing with a father who is not a nice person and treats him pretty badly, something that has been happening most of his life, and he is still hanging out with one of the mates he hung with a school. However, he is starting to question why they are still friends.

These two men meeting again sets off a chain reaction that will change both of their lives in more ways than one. I found this a really emotional read, both of these men had been through a lot and dealt with some painful things. They each created to these in different ways, one going off the rails, the other making his life so rigid and controlled there isn’t room for the unexpected. These guys broke my heart and then put it back together again.

I loved the relationship that blossomed unexpectedly between Naser and Mason and I was more than happy to follow along with them on their journey from enemies to lovers to more. There were plenty of steamy scenes and they both get to explore some of their kinkier sides together and also gain an understanding behind those kinks. While at first, it was hard to understand how Naser could put aside his negative feelings and have anything to do with Mason, their chemistry was so strong that neither could deny their feelings, which worked out well because I don’t think either would have been able to heal and move on if they hadn’t connected.

There were once again some great side characters, Mason’s neighbour was a wonderful friend to Mason when he hit rock bottom, and Naser’s workmates were really good support for him while he was trying to work out his feelings. Mason’s dad however was not a nice character, though we do get to uncover why he is the way he is, he has a lot of making up to do for the emotional impact he has had on Mason.

I really enjoy this author’s writing, he does a great job of pulling me into these characters’ lives and becoming fully invested in them. I’m looking forward to book #3.

Excerpt

“I won’t be here long. I’ve got to get to work.” Naser set the papers in front of Mason and gestured for him to read. Mason skimmed, recognizing the bare bones of an investment agreement. Some of the language seemed boilerplate, and some of it seemed pure Naser. Once he had the gist of it, Mason set the contract down. “I thought your sister didn’t need investors.”

Naser smiled. “Far be it from me to deny a man a chance at redemption.”

“As far as we are from Saturday morning, apparently. No offense, but this is one of the worst investment agreements I’ve ever seen, Naser. The rate of return is basically zero. And the dollar amounts and schedule are both blank.”

Naser smiled and sank into the chair he’d declined a moment before. “The investor in question knows nothing about the fashion industry and has not expressed a desire to learn. In light of that, giving the investor any sort of creative control over the business in question would be a grievous mistake for all involved. Further, the investor’s motives for investing lie far outside any concerns that could be considered…businesslike.”

“The investor is sitting right here, and he doesn’t remember making any of these statements. Also, I think it’s cute that you start sentences with further out loud and not just in emails.”

Naser raised one eyebrow. “The investor is known to have a spotty memory. And there are suggestions he has issues with reliability and consistency as well, so any proposed payment schedule should be…dramatically shortened.”

“The investor has questions,” Mason said.

Naser spread his hands in a welcoming gesture.

“Did you reconsider my offer because you got more info about the state of your sister’s business after you left my house?”

“Are you bisexual?”

Mason flinched. Naser’s stony expression said that had been his intention—and that his sister most certainly did need new investors. “How are those two questions related?”

“We’re only sitting here because for three years you and your buddies subjected me to a form of sexual harassment that’s still considered semi-acceptable in most secondary school settings.”

Mason took a deep breath. The door was still closed. And locked.

“Yes. I’m bisexual.”

Naser seemed startled by the direct answer. He nodded slowly, his tongue making a lump under his upper lip. As if this whole thing would have been easier for him if Mason had deflected or lied, and now he was having to reassess.

“So Fareena wasn’t just busting my balls. Your sister really needs money, doesn’t she?”

Naser smoothed invisible lint off the thighs of his slacks. “I knew you were bisexual,” he muttered.

“Then why did you ask?”

“I don’t know, maybe you were gay and closeted. But Fareena’s Fareena. She’s not going to waste time on a guy that doesn’t have a genuine attraction to her.”

“So I repeat, why did you—”

“Do your buddies know?” Naser was staring at him, eyes blazing with anger.

The question knocked Mason back in his chair an inch. “Tim’s been dead five years.”

Naser looked to the carpet. “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t need to be. He was terrible to you. The Coach Harris email was all his idea.”

Naser drew a deep breath. “Thanks for letting me off the hook, I guess. How did he pass away?”

“Pills. He always said they were for a sports injury from USC, but he warmed the bench the whole time, so that story never made sense. I think he really liked pills. We’re not sure if it was deliberate or if he overshot the mark. There wasn’t a note, but his life wasn’t in a great place.”

Remembering those last few visits with Tim now that he was trying to get sober was more painful than he’d anticipated. Back then, Mason had thought he’d had his shit together, and by comparison to his old friend, who’d dropped out of college and was working odd handyman jobs for his uncle’s contracting company, it had certainly seemed that way. He and Chadwick had even talked about hauling Tim into a rehab—over beers.

Naser nodded, and a silence fell. A silence that, like everything else between them, seemed to bend the laws of time.

“And Chadwick Brody?” Naser’s voice was drawstring tight, but his gaze was steady and penetrating, full of the unspoken recognition that Chadwick had always been the worst out of the three.

“He’s still around.”

Naser was staring at him, waiting for him to say something further. Sensing, it seemed, that Mason’s answer hadn’t been complete or entirely truthful. But maybe expressing hesitation or shame around the topic of Chadwick was what Naser needed to see.

“And no, he doesn’t know that I’m bi. And yes, if you were to walk out of here right now and share this information with the world, you could really screw up my already screwed-up life. Especially with the man down the hall.”

“I’d never do that.”

“I wouldn’t blame you if you did.”

For a second, Mason thought the guy might soften toward him.

“I know what it feels like to be outed before you’re ready,” Naser said. “I’d never inflict that on someone else.”

“We didn’t out you. Everything we did was wrong, but it wasn’t like we knew for sure that you were gay.”

“Yes, you did. You knew every time I looked at you. That’s why you did it.”

Was Naser admitting to having been as hot for Mason as Mason had been for him?

Maybe so, because Naser looked away before Mason did.

Mason picked up the contract. He did some quick math in his head, quick enough that he couldn’t think too long and hard about the consequences of what he was about to do.

He wrote down a figure, followed by a schedule, then he flipped to the signature page and signed his name. Pari Kazemi, he saw, had yet to add her own.

When he handed the contract back to Naser, the guy read Mason’s additions and went stone still.

“A lump sum payment of one hundred grand on signing?” Naser sounded winded. Mason nodded. “You don’t have to buy my silence, Mason.”

“I’m not trying to buy anything. I’m trying to make this right.”

Naser swallowed and looked to the paper again as if he thought his eyes were deceiving him. “Okay, well, obviously nothing’s final until my sister countersigns.”

“I’ll be here if anyone has questions.”

“Proof of funds would be nice.”

“You saw the house.”

Naser stood. “It’s not your house. I did a title check.”

Mason laughed breathily. “Well, you’re good at your job. I can have proof of funds to you by the end of the week.”

“Good. I’m not saying a word to her until after then. I don’t want to get her hopes up.”

Naser turned and headed for the door. Mason figured his speed was an effort to conceal any evidence of his gratitude.

“Naser.”

He stopped, fingers resting on the knob. They both seemed frozen by the knowledge that if Naser opened the door even a crack before they were done talking, he might let some of Mason’s secrets spill out into the world.

“What was the worst thing we did?” Mason asked as gently as he could.

Mason prepared himself for another verbal strike. But when Naser turned to him, head slightly bowed, he saw the man was struggling to swim through a sea of painful memories, struggling to get his arms around one without drowning, and the twist in Mason’s gut felt almost as bad as a hangover.
