Book Blitz, Excerpt & Giveaway: Suddenly, Last Summer By Michael Robert

TREY BARNES

I professed my love for Jordy when I was seventeen. He was leaving for his last year of medical school after working another summer at my family’s Banks Lake resort in the Pacific Northwest.

Desperate for him to know how I felt even though he was my older brother’s best friend, and fearing that he wouldn’t return after that summer, I decided to take the plunge and admit my feelings while I had the chance.

As the adult in the situation, Jordy wisely chose to discount my confession as simply a teenage crush. But my last spoken words to him were that I’d wait patiently for him.

And I always kept my promises.

JORDY HALL

I’d been away from my small hometown for nearly five years. Life and a stressful medical residency had kept me busy, but I finally returned to fulfill my best-man duties for my best friend’s upcoming wedding.

His younger brother, Trey, was a sweet, sensitive kid when I left years ago. The shy, lean teenager who’d tearfully professed his love for me my last summer there had grown into a sexy, confident man. I was intrigued by what I saw, though I probably should have walked away again.

Had he actually waited for me to return? Did I hope he had? He was nine years my junior and my best friend’s little brother. But he could be so much more.

After five long years, it was suddenly last summer.

Prologue: Jordy

Five years ago

“Where is he?” I asked, setting the final packed box on the counter.

“Probably down at the dock,” Mrs. Barnes answered. Her back was to me as she finished with the dinner dishes.

“You think he’ll come up to say goodbye before I have to leave?” I couldn’t see him but knew he was most likely securing the resort’s watercraft for the night.

She wiped her hands on a dish towel, tossed it on the counter, and joined me at the sliding glass door overlooking the lake. We watched her youngest son while he busied himself at the dock. “He’s hurting, Jordy.”

I let out a small laugh but not because I was being insensitive. “Just like every other summer, isn’t it?” I asked.

“It seems worse this summer,” she said. “Since you and Brock started college, he hates the coming of September. I guess it’s too quiet for him with just Mom and Dad around.” Mrs. Barnes took a long breath in before sighing deeply. “Imagine how he’s going to feel when you graduate medical school this year and he finds out you won’t be able to help us out any longer?”

“I’ll be back,” I defended. “Are you saying you don’t need my help next summer?”

“You’ll be starting your residency after this year, son. I expect you’ll have to move to wherever that is next summer.”

“Let’s hope that happens, Mrs. B” I turned to face her, expecting a hug. “I haven’t received a hospital matching letter yet,” I added. “It’s competitive trying to get my first choice, so hopefully I’ll know where that is in a few months.”

“You are the single brightest kid I know, Jordy. Don’t be so modest,” she said, wiping something off of my shirt and fussing like mothers tend to do.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes had been my surrogate parents ever since the accident, and I missed mine terribly.

“You better not let Brock hear you say that,” I said.

She giggled. “Even Brock knows that.” She glanced back toward the lake. “Can you check on him before you leave, son? I think he’s twice as upset today’s the day you’re leaving. You’d think he’d be missing his actual brother more than you.”

“I’ll head down after I load that final box.” I headed for the back door and the driveway before remembering an important rule. “Oops!” I turned back and found her scowling at me. “You know I wouldn’t leave without one of your hugs, Mrs. B.”

“As I thought,” she said, arms open wide for me.

We embraced and she kissed my cheek as a diversion while stuffing her hand in my shirt pocket.

“A little something for your trip.”

I knew better than to fight her about what I knew was additional money. I didn’t need money but she didn’t know that. “You guys already paid me out for the summer, ma’am.”

“Don’t ma’am me, mister!” She dragged her finger across her throat like she planned to slit mine.

“I love you,” I whispered and went in for another hug.

“I love you too, Jordy. Now please go say bye to Trey before you leave.”

It’d been another amazing summer on Banks Lake. My best friend, Brock, and his family owned a resort on the shores of the manmade body of water. This was possibly my last summer working at the general store/gas station/boat rental/RV park resort. Brock had already headed back to California. He was finishing law school and had relocated away from our shared apartment in Palo Alto. He’d also started a new part-time job and they needed him early. I’d stayed back and helped the Barnes’ finish up the summer. After Labor day, things slowed down in this ‘barely there’ town in Eastern Washington, so they’d manage fine without the extra help once I left.

It was strangely quiet as I walked downhill to the dock, trying my best to dodge the evening sprinklers. The bulk of the last tourists of the season was gone. Two motorhomes and a couple of tents were all that were left in the park area designated for campers. The cabins along the shore had no guests in them while a couple of the larger resort houses were still occupied.

I spotted Trey at the end of the main dock where all the rental watercrafts sat idle after a busy summer. He was in one of the larger pontoon boats, sitting under the canopy out of the late afternoon sun. It was still hot here in September and I knew he’d had a long day cleaning and securing the watercraft. His back was to me and he only noticed he had an intruder to his thoughts when I stepped off the floating dock and onto the boat, causing it to rock gently. He turned toward me and then looked away quickly.

“What?” I asked. “Not talking to me anymore?”

There was no response as he held his gaze across the water, avoiding mine. Trey was Brock’s younger brother. A terrific young man and very loving, but he wore his heart on his sleeve. Nothing like his older brother who was arrogant, sure of himself, and warm to few people. I was one of the people he was warm to, so we got along fine. Brock and I had been best friends since elementary school and inseparable ever since. College and post-graduate years were hurting that closeness, but the best friends tag still stuck.

Once away from Electric City and attending college at Stanford, I’d come out. It wasn’t a surprise to Brock as he’d known since sophomore year. He was straight but always said if he wasn’t, I’d be his guy on that front. Oddly, even though he was hot, I never saw him that way. Just not my type. Brock was too short, too dark, and too brooding.

The summer had been good for Trey. He was his usual end-of-summer, golden-skinned, self, with a mop of sun-bleached blond hair. He was smooth, lean, and possessed a naturally athletic build that had really come on the past two summers as he approached eighteen. We’d just celebrated his seventeenth over the fourth of July.

“I’m talking to you, kiddo,” I said a bit louder.

“I’m not a kid,” he whined, sounding exactly like one.

I moved to his side and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m heading out,” I said. “Just wanted to make sure to say goodbye to my best little buddy.”

He swatted my hand from his neck. “Brock’s your best friend,” he stated, still avoiding eye contact.

I sat beside him on the wide boat seat and slid into him, forcing him over so I could invade his space and be close. I stared at the side of his angelic face while he continued to ignore me. Trey was a beautiful young man and had a heart of gold. Sometimes people easily dole out the expected compliments when describing attractive people, but Trey had earned his in spades. The kid was blessed in the looks department but had no clue. He was heartbreakingly attractive. But, he was still a kid and he was also my best friend’s younger brother, so I kept my heart’s opinions about him to myself. My feelings were curious concerning the attraction I felt toward him. He was a kid. I was an adult. Those were the facts and I’d decided to stick to them.

“Yeah, he is my best buddy, but I like you a lot too,” I answered, leaning forward and resting my elbows on the tops of my thighs, turning to see if he was looking at me.

Thirty seconds went by before he turned to me. He was tearing up.

“Hey now, buddy. What’s all this?” I put an arm around his shoulders and pulled him in tight. “I’ll be back. I promise I will.”

“No you won’t,” he mumbled, wiping at his eyes, clearly embarrassed about the tears. “Mom already told me you’re not going to be able to help us out next summer.”

“I might not become a doctor if I don’t work harder, so it’s not for sure, Trey. Besides, I’d never forget about you.”

“You’ll be the best doctor and you know it. You always get everything you want. Heck, even Brock says you’re the smartest guy he knows.” He hiccupped as he fought the full-on cry he was desperately trying to avoid. “Then you’ll just go off and I’ll never hear from you,” he said quietly, trying to shrug out of my hug.

I held him tighter so he couldn’t.

“Shit, even Brock doesn’t come around much anymore and now you’ll go away forever too.”

“That’s just not true, Trey. Come on. Why are you acting like this?” I moved my hand from his shoulder and held the back of his head, mussing with his sun-drenched hair. “We had a great summer didn’t we?” I asked. “I had a blast working and hanging out with you again.” His head slumped forward and I attempted to steer his neck my way trying to get him to look at me. He wouldn’t budge. “You don’t really believe I won’t be back, do you?” I asked.

He was silent.

“Look at me,” I said, nudging his side.

Trey turned toward me and had heavier tears streaming down his face. “You . . . you . . . you don’t get it, do you?” he asked.

“Get what?”

He shuffled his feet and tugged at threads hanging from his tattered jean shorts. “I love you, Jordy.”

“I know that, kiddo. I love you too.”

“Not like that,” he protested. “I love you, love you.

Synopsis

Ford

I’ve never thought much about Orson Naples.

He’s a cute guy who I’d seen around town a few times, but then one day he up and left and didn’t reappear until a few years later. No one knows where he went or what he was doing, all this gossipy town knows is that he’s a widower, owns the florist, and is friends with that divorced group that hang out at the Killer Brew all the time.

But then one day I step into his flower shop and go from rarely thinking about him, to him constantly being on my mind.

There’s a restlessness to him that I’m dying to unlock answers to.

And his eyes linger on me a little too long for a straight man …

Orson

Ford Thomas is a pest. A delightful one. A tempting one. But I’m too old for games.

The ones I’ve played in the past have always led me to trouble which is why I vowed to settle down and live a quiet life.

So when Ford walks into my shop all uncontained energy and flirty quips in a pair of heavy work boots, I know I should show him the door.

I don’t need fun. I don’t need experiences.

Especially when those experiences have me questioning things I thought I knew about myself.

My tongue swipes over my lips as we head for the truck, and I know I shouldn’t steer the conversation to where I want to steer it, but fuck, I can’t help myself. “You’re straight, but you want to go to a gay bar? You really wouldn’t care about men touching you? A sweaty dude pressed up against you who wants to suck your cock. You … you wouldn’t give a shit?”

“Nope. Been there, done that.”

“But a guy paying for a lap dance is clinical, transactional. Someone doing it because they want to is another thing.”

Orson’s jaw ticks, and then he pushes off the truck. “Prove it.”

“Huh?”

He turns us and backs me into the door, arms boxing me in but not touching. He’s grinning, playful, biting his bottom lip against a laugh. “Touch me because you want to, and I’ll let you know if it’s weird.”

“It’s already weird.”

“Shit. Sorry.” He steps back, but I grab him and flip us, slamming his back into Momma T as I step in closer than he was before. The top of his head reaches my eye level, and I have to look down at him. The familiar curious expression stares back at me.

“You really inviting me to touch you?”

“Do you want to?”

I sneer. “That’s like asking a thirsty man if he wants water.”

Orson blinks up at me, a sweetness shining from his eyes. “Only if you’re comfortable. You’re, uh, I enjoy spending time with you, and I wouldn’t want things to get … you know.”

“’Preciate it, but a sexy guy is offering to let me feel him up, and you will never hear me complain about that.”

“If you’re cool, I’m cool. Just maybe no between the legs action.”

“Ass?”

“It’d be groped on the dance floor, right?”

“Constantly.” “Then go for it.”

I watch him, trying to read if this is for real or if he’s about to freak the fuck out, but he just watches me back, waiting. Looking completely at ease that I’m about to paw him until I have my fill of every one of those muscles his clothes have been hiding from me. I wasn’t lying when I said I’d never complain about touching him.

I swallow roughly and settle my hands on his shoulders.

Orson rolls his lips to hold in his amusement. “Are we going to a club in the 1800s? I didn’t realize gay bars were so polite.”

“Fine, smart-ass.” I let my hands drift from his round shoulders, over his impressive pecs, and along every groove I can feel on his stomach.

“Comfortable now?”

Some of the teasing leaves his face, but he nods. “Totally fine.”

“And now?” My fingers duck beneath the bottom of his T-shirt, and it’s like having pure fucking heat in my hands. Smooth abs, no body hair that I can feel, and skin that’s like silk.

Hoo.” Orson lets out a shaky breath that my cock takes note of. “Wasn’t expecting that. All good though.”

And maybe I should have expected more resilience from someone who used to make a living from showing off his body, but I’m completely fucking gobsmacked that he’s letting me stand here and grope him. My biggest worry right now is that he’ll regret it, or it’ll mess shit up between us, but then his hands cover where mine are resting under his shirt, the thin material separating us. He guides my hands up to his pecs, and I can’t help my thumb flicking over the small bump of his nipple.

I let out a long, slow exhale, trying to ignore the way my cock is thickening.

He swallows, and I swear it’s heavier than usual. “Totally fine.”

“Hmm …” I step in so my body is pressed to his. Toe to toe, thighs pressed close, stomach flush with his abs. My hands are trapped between us, fingers exploring the light hair on his chest. “It’s not only the touch though, is it?”

“What do you mean?” His smooth voice has dropped deeper.

“I mean, physical touch is one thing, but it’s also your mind. It’s knowing the guy with his hands on you wants more.”

“That’s nothing new.”

“It’s knowing his blood is rushing south. His pulse has kicked up a notch. His cock is rock hard in his pants.”

Orson smirks. “Think you’re making me uncomfortable, Ford?”

I lock eyes with him. “It’s knowing the guy’s gut is flipping out with want and excitement. The expectation of where things are heading next.”

“What else?”

Damn, that question almost makes me groan. “It’s knowing that even though you’re together now, he’s already picturing later.” I slide one hand out from under his shirt to run my fingers over his lips. “He’s picturing you on your knees, these pretty lips stretched wide around his cock.”

Air rushes past my fingers as he sucks in a breath.

“He’s picturing you stripped naked, maybe gripping his hair as you drill into his mouth. Maybe he’s bent over for you. Or maybe … maybe he’s got you bent over, sexy ass in the air while he fucks the life out of you.”

Our faces are closer now, his eyes wide, lips wet and parted. “Is that what you’re thinking?”

Holy shit. An exhale bounces from me. My cock is making it hard to think, but I do know that question wasn’t curiosity. I do know the way he’s looking at me is inviting more. But I also know that Orson wasn’t prepared for whatever this situation is doing to us both.

So I give him honesty. “No.” My jaw tightens at his surprise. “Because I won’t fucking let myself.”

I shove away from him, leaving Orson’s shirt askew, a sliver of those delicious abs on display as he reorients himself.

He gives his head a shake and focuses back on me. Then he smiles. “See? Told you I don’t scare easy.”

I’m torn on whether to laugh or cry because no, he certainly doesn’t. And I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or not. I give his ass a solid slap. “Get in the truck. We’ve had enough playtime for tonight.”

CRACKS IN THE ICE

by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Synopsis

How can they trust love not to hurt them again?

Benny

I’ll never fall in love again.

I had my chance, and I was the happiest man you can imagine. One day, it all came to an end. The only thing left was playing hockey, but it wasn’t enough, and I became my own worst enemy.

When my old school offered me a lifeline, I took it. As a coach, I could at least be miserable in a different place.

But when I arrived, there he was—bright and warm, like sunshine. I’d lived in the dark for so long my soul was frozen, but he thawed me out. I started feeling things again, wanting things. For the first time since the dark times began, I wondered if there was a chance. I’d never thought about being with another man, but so what? Could I be lucky enough to find love twice?

Cole

I was done. No. More. Men.

I’d always made the worst possible dating choices, and one guy after another took advantage of me. Invariably, I thought I was falling in love. Once I told them, they’d show their true colors and run.

Worn out and unable to stand another heartbreak, I swore off love. I almost had my master’s degree, and playing the piano was a much safer route to happiness.

No sooner had I made up my mind than there he was—hot as a forest fire, yet very sad. When I found out why, I understood. Someday, he’d love again, but there was no reason I shouldn’t be a friend.

Then he kissed me, and everything turned on a dime. I needed to protect myself from getting pulled in again, but the harder I tried, the more I believed in him. Was I making another horrible mistake? Would this time be different, or was I setting myself up for the biggest letdown of all?

Cracks in the Ice is a gay sports romance featuring hurt/comfort, sensitive men, unexpected connections, first times, an age gap, faculty/student romance, explosive chemistry, hard-earned happiness, and a very satisfying HEA.

Content warnings for partner deaths, traumatic accidents, and alcohol abuse. While these issues happened in the past, they may still be difficult for some.

I didn’t know if I’d ever find anyone to love again, or if Cole was even interested in me, but there was only one way to find out.

“Benny?”

“Yeah?”

He eyed me curiously. “Are you all right? I called your name a couple of times.”

I relaxed into a smile. “Good. I’m really good.”

“Diana said she’ll call you later. Her mom needed something, and she had to run.”

When I remained quiet, Cole’s eyes darted to the side and he said, “I’m sorry.”

I focused on his plump, rosy lips again. Not to mention his pink cheeks, blue eyes, and silky, golden hair. “Sorry for what?”

“For what I almost let happen before. I don’t know what came over me, but…”

A hum started in my chest, radiating tingles around my body. “I’m the one who started it. I liked it.”

He blinked rapidly. “You did?”

My stomach flipped at how his voice squeaked.

“I did.” The humming and tingling grew stronger, and I stepped forward until I was standing in front of him. “I do.”

“Oh.” His chest rose and fell quickly, and he whispered, “Me too.”

I was tempted to back away, but fuck that. Reaching out, I stroked his chin with a thumb. My heart knocked against my ribs as I leaned over. He inclined his head, moving it toward mine. With only a hair’s breadth separating us, we caressed the space between us with our lips. Who made the final move, I’ll never know, but powerful, almost forgotten sensations washed over me—soft, warm lips against mine; electrifying surges of emotion; an overwhelming desire to hold him.

We wrapped our arms around each other, and gentle brushes of our lips led to a real kiss. I hadn’t remembered how sweet it could be, how right it could feel, how it was somehow the most intimate thing two could share.

Cole withdrew enough to lick the corners of my mouth before pressing his lips against mine again. We went back and forth, kissing lips and stubbly cheeks and jutting chins. It was a new experience for me. I loved how Cole purred when I kissed along his cheekbone. He didn’t have much of a beard, but as we moved, his short whiskers caught against mine. Even holding him was a new experience—his body firm where I’d been used to soft, defined in a different way. The moment was perfect as we returned to each other’s mouths time and again, huffing air through our noses when we had to breathe. We held each other close, and I hoped we’d never have to move again.

Time was lost, and when we eventually parted, he panted at me through swollen lips. “Oh, Benny. That was…”

“Yeah.” I gulped, already wanting to kiss him again. “It was.”

He drew his eyebrows together. “Did you mean it? Why did you do it?”

“Because I had to. I meant it more than I have anything in a long time.”

He took my hands while a grin spread across his face. “Me too, but…”

A jolt of anxiety had my heart taking off again. “What? Did I do something wrong? I never kissed a guy before.”

He erupted in a short, maniacal laugh. “Wrong? Did you do something wrong?” He sighed and laid his hand over his chest. “It was the best kiss I ever had. You did everything right.”

“Thank God.” My breath considered returning to normal. “Because it blew me away.”

Moving his hand from his chest, he trailed his fingers along my cheek. “It was the first time you’ve kissed a guy? Really?”

I nodded.

“Do you feel okay about that part of it?”

“I was nervous, to be honest, but I feel incredible. I’m hoping we can do it again.”

He tilted his head and quirked an eyebrow. “Does that mean you’ll stick around this afternoon?”

I grinned, hoping I didn’t look too dopey. “If you’ll let me.”

“Oh, I’ll let you. I have to admit, though—I never saw that one coming, Benny Caldwell.”

“What I’m trying to say is that I like you, Daly. A lot.”

“I like you, too.”

Silence descends on us, giving us both time to think, to catch up with everything that’s been said and the implications of it all.

Three months—from when Daly first made the offer to sleep with me until the night before my birthday—is a funny length of time. Twelve weeks. Ninety days. An entire season. I can’t decide whether it’s long or short. But in the past two months we’ve spent together, it feels like both a lifetime and an instant.

It’s a little confusing. We were only meant to like each other enough so that when we had sex, we felt comfortable. Friendly-ish. No feelings. No relationship was ever on the cards for us. But the truth is, we’ve gotten to know each other so well. I’m pretty sure Daly hasn’t shared his news with a ton of people. I’ve opened up to him and told him things very few people know about me, too.

And despite seeing him almost every day, I want to keep seeing him. Spending more time with him. Getting to know him better. Helping him grow his business. Just being anywhere he is. That’s where I want to be.

I avert my gaze for this next part. Heat rises in my cheeks, but I say the words anyway. I’m not going to chicken out and regret not saying something ever again. “I realize it’s not in our contract. In fact, I think there’s an exclusion clause that specifically prohibits this very thing since we weren’t meant to develop romantic feelings for each other, but…I have. I’ve gone ahead and stupidly caught feelings for you.”

Daly chuckles, then explains, “When you put it like that, it sounds like you’re talking about a disease.” He takes my hand in his. “But if that’s the case, then I’ve got the exact same disease you have.”

“Really?”

“Really. Right from the very start, you’ve blown me away. But me being me, it took me months just to work up the courage to be able to string together more than a few words to say to you.”

“But then I swanned in with that hole punch gag.”

“Gag?” Daly arches an eyebrow. “Sure, let’s go with that and pretend like it was all planned.”

“Fine by me.” I laugh, feeling some of the tension in the air thinning out.

“I haven’t had a relationship since the cancer. Just hookups. Never anything serious. It worked for a while until it didn’t.”

“What changed?”

“I tried to convince myself that casual was the way to go. I figured no one would want to be with me and my post-cancer body, so I took anything serious or long-term off the table. I told myself that it was because I was living in London and didn’t want to meet someone only to have to do the long-distance thing. Maybe that was partly true, but I see more clearly now that I was mainly interested in protecting myself. Like Fulton said, it’s hard to trust someone when your body is…different.”

“But you’re a relationship kinda guy, aren’t you?” I hedge. I know what his answer will be before he says it.

“Yeah. I am.”

All the feelings I’ve got for him get amplified by the honesty and vulnerability he’s displaying right now. I close the space between us and cradle him in my arms. “Thank you for telling me. Everything. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for you.” I work my hand up and down his back. “It means a lot to me that you trust me.”

I can hear him breathing, sensing his mind working overtime. “I do trust you,” he says softly. “I really do.”

Review

Once again I enjoyed this entertaining novel, the second in this series. Trav and Dylan were an unlikely couple, but really worked well together even when they were being sarcastic or snarky because that was the way they communicated.

When Dylan runs into trouble on the job and doesn’t know who he can trust, he runs for help from the guy he considers a pain in the backside and possibly not someone who follows the law, but at the same time, he knows he can trust Trav to keep him safe.

These two have a little history, a brief encounter in a bar and then a misunderstanding on a mutual job, it’s caused lots of tension over the years, and Trav has made the most of the time to stick it to Dylan whenever he can. Despite this, they both have a degree of respect for each other. Trav is full of sarcasm and snark, but this is how he tries to keep his heart from being broken. Now they’ve been thrown together, they have to readjust their feelings for each other and what they want for the future. But first Mike Bravo Ops needs to uncover how far the corruption goes in Dylan’s team and within law enforcement.

This was a fun read with OTT action and plenty of bad guys that need to be taken out to keep Dylan and the team safe.

I enjoyed catching up with the rest of the team they provided much entertainment.

Synopsis

TRAV

I remember the first time I met Dylan Rodriguez. It was one sweaty encounter I’ll never forget.

The second time we met, he arrested me. I can still see the hot scowl on his beautiful face as he slapped handcuffs on me and realized I was … me.

Dylan’s main goal in life is to forget he ever met me. My goal is to make him mine.

Turns out, I’m better at this game than he is.

DYLAN

When my law enforcement career falls to pieces in front of my own eyes, I don’t know who I can trust.

I have nowhere to go. No one to turn to.

Asking Trav for help is a last resort, but I’m desperate.

If he can’t get me out of this mess, I may as well turn myself over to the guys hunting me down.

I’m not sure which will be more difficult: protecting my life or my heart.

Because when it comes to love, my heart wants what my brain doesn’t. It wants Travis West.

Audiobook Blog Tour: Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: The New Next One by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

The New Next One (Bethesda Barracudas Hockey, Book 2) By Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Narrated by Nick J. Russo

Publisher: Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood ~ Release Date: June 30, 2022

Version: Unabridged Audio ~ Whispersync – Voice Enabled ~ Length: 2 hours and 1 minute

Heat Level: 3 – Some Sex ~ Pairing: Male/Male ~ Genre: Sports Romance, Contemporary Gay Romance, Romance

Tropes: New Adult, Friends-to-Lovers, Hockey, Medium-angst, Coming of Age

How much are you willing to give up for the man you love?

Best friends Nick Johnson and Tyler Jensen seem to have the world by the tail. The eighteen-year-old stars of their school’s hockey team are looking forward to playing in college and hoping for careers with the pros.

Nick and Tyler know a lot about each other, but there are a few important details they haven’t discussed. To start with, neither man knows the other is gay. Making things interesting, Nick has a massive crush on Tyler, something he’s kept to himself for a long time. And although he’s never said a word about it, Tyler has wanted to date Nick since they met.

On a cold Minnesota night after a big win, Tyler finds the courage to confess his feelings to Nick. When Nick admits his attraction to Tyler, their relationship turns on a dime. As they fall in love, they skate around the challenges of a secret romance in an all-male boarding school, but what will happen when the stakes rise dramatically in a sport not known for being gay-friendly? Will Nick and Tyler make the easy choice or the hard one?

The New Next One is a new adult, friends-to-lovers romance featuring young athletes, plenty of steam, and a lot of emotion. Besides learning the background for Nice Catching You, you will meet the main characters for the authors’ book Fire in the Ice.

Review

An enjoyable short story about Nick who we met in Book #1 Nice Catching You and Tyler who we meet in book #3 Fire in the Ice. Nick J Russo does a good job of portraying the characters in this novella, I really liked his portrayal of Nick.

Tyler and Nick have been friends for years and have hidden the fact they are gay from each other and everyone else. When Tyler takes a risk and expresses his feelings to Nick everything changes for them both, but it’s still a secret from the rest of the world. I really felt for these guys, it’s sad they felt the need to hide who they were so as to be able to play a sport. I loved their blossoming relationship and it was nice to get the background of them both, especially Tyler as his relationship with Nick and their friend Kevin really comes into play in Fire in the Ice. I’d have probably preferred to read this before book #1 as I’m all for continuity of timelines when reading a series, but it still works well reading it after.

Excerpt

“I’ve got an idea,” I said. “It’s way below freezing outside, so let’s make snow.” Tyler looked like he wanted to kiss me, and Kev gave a big Labrador grin. Really, his tongue stuck out over his lower lip.

“I’ve got an electric kettle,” Ty said. “Let’s go up to my room.”

Upstairs, Kevin spent a moment gawking at the old movie posters on Tyler’s wall and checking out his signed hockey card collection. Ty put on water to boil, and one litre at a time, we carried hot water to the window and threw it out into the polar air.

Being stuck in the woods in Minnesota, making snow was a favourite winter pastime for St. Mark’s students. As we’d learned in physics class, cold air doesn’t hold as much water vapour as warm air, so the water condenses in the cold. When you throw boiling water into frigid air, the droplets freeze instantaneously, forming crystals that look like snow.

“Woo!” Ty shouted as his latest toss turned into snowflakes and fell to the ground three stories below. “More snow. Just what Minnesota needs.”

Review

I really enjoyed Robbie and Brandon’s story, there was a great deal of humour throughout and I loved the interactions between these two.

I enjoyed this more than book one, possibly because there were fewer pranks and there seemed to be more connection between these guys, probably because they were already friends. I also liked that Robbie was secure in his quest to explore his sexuality and was just, it is what it is, no need for drama. That Robbie wanted to explore this with one of his Frat brothers was sweet and understandable in that he felt safe with these guys and was secure he wouldn’t be judged. I thought the way that Brandon and Robbie decided to dive into the experiment after two very hot kisses was sweet too and the fact they were able to communicate, for the most part how they were feeling about it all was a bonus. I’m never a fan of miscommunication or lack of communication being used to create unnecessary drama, and in this novel, there was none of that.

I liked catching up with Chad and Bailey from book #1 Frat Wars: King of Thieves and seeing that they are going strong.

I will still never completely get the whole fraternity scene, but I am enjoying this series and am looking forward to book 3 because there are definite hints along the way about two of the characters and I’m hoping I’m on the right track.

Synopsis

Bro big or bro home.

Robbie

As social chair of Sigma Beta Psi, I’m the life of the party. It’s what I’m known for, and if it’s not fun, I’m not interested, simple as that.
I’m not someone who overthinks.
So when one of my brothers hooks up with a dude from another frat house, it catches me off guard when I can’t stop thinking about them … together.
There’s only one way for me to get this obsession out of my head and that’s by jumping in with both feet and putting it into practice.
The problem is, the one guy who’s up for the ride, is the last one I’d expect.

Brandon

Being risk manager of a frat house is nobody’s idea of a good time. My brothers get annoyed when I put a damper on their plans, and wrangling drunken frat brothers isn’t how I pictured my Saturday nights of senior year.
I’m bored.
In a rut.
Study, frat duties, planning for the future.
When is it my turn to let loose for a moment?
So when my dumb-as-bricks frat bro is scoping out the house for a little experimenting fun, I throw out the offer like it isn’t the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever considered.
I never imagined I’d actually enjoy it.

Fire in the Ice By Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Narrated by Nick J. Russo Publisher: Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Release Date: 3/14/2022 Length: 8 hours 19 minutes Heat Level: 3 – Some Sex

Pairing: Male/Male Genre: Romance, Contemporary Gay Romance, Sports Romance Tropes: Hockey, Jock/Jock, Teammates, Second Chances, Friends-to-Lovers

What if love threatened to destroy everything you’d worked for?

Hockey right winger Tyler Jensen isn’t thrilled to get the news he’s been traded to the Bethesda Barracudas. The team may be red-hot in the rankings, but there’s someone there he’d rather not have to see every day.

Defenseman Kevin Moore is one of the top-rated rookies in the country. He’s living the dream playing for the Barracudas—until he hears that his old high-school crush Tyler is joining the team. Ty was once everything Kev wanted, but their age difference got in the way. Tyler decided a three-year gap was too much and left Kevin behind.

In Bethesda, Tyler doesn’t take long to notice that Kevin has grown up into precisely the kind of man he can’t resist—brawny, brainy, and beautiful. Kev feels the pull too, and as the men become closer, they work hard to keep their budding relationship secret. Professional hockey may be welcoming gay players now, but Ty and Kev aren’t sure management would like the idea of two Barracudas taking teamwork to an entirely new level.

As the playoffs loom, news of their romance gets out. Ty and Kev, caught in a storm of controversy that threatens to destroy them, need a power play to save their careers. How will they find one before it’s too late?

Fire in the Ice delivers on the promise that second chances can work and dreams can come true. If you like exciting hockey, plenty of humour, a beautiful HEA, new adults, young athletes, and enough heat to burn down the house, this book is for you.

Excerpt

“Want some snacks?” I asked. “Got to have snacks with a movie.”

“Wonder what they have?”

We found the room service menu but decided we were still too full from dinner to order appetizers.

Ty called downstairs. “Any chance you could bring us some popcorn and candy?”

“And sodas,” I added. “Tell them to bring sodas.”

They delivered our order quickly, and we set up camp on my bed. Instead of watching a current release, we chose the old movie Revenge of the Nerds. Room service had brought an enormous bowl of popcorn, and our hands brushed repeatedly as we dipped in for more. We sat close together, and Tyler’s heat radiated off him. After finishing the snacks, we lay down. We weren’t touching, but just as our hands had found each other in the popcorn bowl, our legs, arms, and hips made frequent contact as we shifted around.

I eventually tired of the movie and decided some conversation would be good. “How are you liking the Barracudas?”

“A lot more than I expected to. The guys are all great, and we’ve clicked as a team. It’s almost like Birky and I have been playing with you all year.”

“I agree.” I found the TV remote, turned down the volume, and then stretched. My arm bumped into Tyler’s, and not feeling like moving it, I left it there. “You’ve been playing really well since you got to Bethesda.”

He pressed his arm against mine. “Think it has much to do with you, Nick, and me playing together before?”

“I’m sure that’s a factor. We were good in prep school. We’ve all improved our skills since then, but we’re still the same people.”

He turned on his side toward me, his knee bumping my leg in the process. “We were good friends in prep school, but we can be even better now as something else.” He moved his arm and traced a finger against the side of my hand. “I like you a lot, Kev. I always did, but things weren’t right for us a few years ago. Nicky and I were breaking up, and you were just coming out of kidhood.”

I snickered. “Kidhood? Is that a word?”

“Is now.”

“I’m not a kid anymore.”

“Believe me, I’ve noticed.”

Things went quiet. The movie droned softly in the background, and just as I was trying to think of something to say, Tyler took my hand. I loved the warmth of his skin and the way our workout calluses scraped against each other. I didn’t even consider pulling away; Tyler Jensen wanted to hold my hand, and I liked it.

Blog Tour, Review & Giveaway: Egotistical Puckboy by Eden Finley & Saxon James

Image item

Review

Egotistical Puckboy (Puckboys #1) was a really enjoyable start to a new series. I really enjoyed these authors previous collaboration with the CU Hockey series and this new one didn’t disappoint.

Both Ezra and Anton were great characters, both dealing with life and hockey the best they could, Ezra by partying, not making emotional attachments and being out and proud, and Anton by focusing on his hockey career and having discrete hookups and keeping his sexuality out of the public’s eye. Their outlooks on their lives stem from their upbringing and families and uncovering some of the reasons behind what motivated the other was eye-opening for them both.

These two were both good for a laugh and I loved their blossoming friendship/relationship which started out as rivalry on the ice and a dislike of the other for how they perceived each other to be. Both were as egotistical as the other in different ways and the banter and snark between them was fun. I loved that they communicated everything between them and made being with each other a fun experience even while keeping it secret from their team members and from the public.

I really loved the concept of the Queer Collective which we got a taste of in the previous series. Having a group of guys who will have your back no matter what team you are on is a great idea and I’m sure in the world of sports, this should be a thing in every sport, giving LGBTQI+ people a group where they feel they can be supported and understood is extremely important, especially in areas that can be full of toxic masculinity.

This was a fun and romantic enemies to lovers read and I look forward to more of this series.

SYNOPSIS

EZRA

Partying, dudes, and hockey. What more could a gay NHL player want?

If it weren’t for Anton Hayes, my life would be perfect.

Not that he affects my life in any way. At all. That would imply I care what the winger from Philly thinks of me.

Which I don’t.

Not even a one-night stand with him can thaw his misplaced animosity toward me.

He says I’m the one with the ego, but he can talk. He rivals me for most egotistical puck boy in the league.

I hate him as much as he hates me. Even if I crave a repeat.

ANTON

When it comes to hockey, I’m all about the game.

I’ve worked for years to be one of the best in the league, and l’ve done it without splashing my orientation all over the tabloids.

My hockey image is one I’ve carefully cultivated, and after one night with Ezra Palaszczuk, I risk it all.

He’s cocky, obnoxious, and has an ego bigger than Massachusetts. And okay, maybe he’s the sexiest man I’ve ever known.

We’ll never get along. Not when we sleep together. Not even when my possessive streak awakens.

That doesn’t stop us from falling into bed together over and over again.
