My Review

I loved this book, the final in the series. I read this series out of order, with book 3 Goal Lines & First Times being the first book I read and also where we first meet Westly the main character in this book. Westly had a promising future in the NHL until his parents died and he had to give up his dream to look after his younger siblings and became a coach at CU. His brother Asher is now the one working towards a promising NHL career and he is struggling with maths, Westly steps in to talk to his professor, Jasper, and they get off to a very rocky start. Jasper is known as a grumpy hardass professor and doesn’t like jocks at all, so having a hockey coach come in to ask for what he considers special treatment for a hotshot hockey player causes them to both bump heads.

After their initial meeting, they find they have some serious chemistry and when Westly becomes Jasper’s fake boyfriend for a school reunion, one thing leads to another, but with Westly’s crazy home life and Jasper’s dislike of jocks and love, there doesn’t seem to be a way to have more than some quick thrills.

These two came together so easily, they were just great together and I really enjoyed their friendship and developing relationship, something that happened without either of them realising it was happening. I loved the support they gave each other and I loved that this was a low angst read.

I recommend you read them in order for maximum storyline cohesion, but they do work well out of order if that’s how you roll.

Synopsis

WESTLY

The fall from NHL superstar to domestic disaster was swift and painful. When I became the legal guardian of my five younger siblings, I had no idea what I was doing.

One year later, I’m still lost.

Coaching CU’s hockey team might be the only thing I’m excelling at. But when our star forward is failing math, I have to do what it takes to keep him on the team. Even if it’s going head-to-head with Jasper Eckstein.

One minute I’m confronting the notorious hockey-hating professor, and the next I’m agreeing to be his date to his twenty-year high school reunion.

I don’t know how that happened.

JASPER

My rules are simple. I don’t give extra credit. Ever. No matter how entitled jocks think they are, I refuse to give them special treatment.

It’s not because I hate them. It’s not because a hockey player broke my nose in high school.

It’s fair.

But when Westly Dalton bursts into my office like a hurricane, all my principles fly out the window.

Suddenly I’m giving extra credit.

And I have a date to my reunion.

After one explosive night together, I want more, but his home life is a mess, and I don’t want to get in the way. If all we can have is quick thrills, I’m okay with that.

It’s not like I could ever fall for a jock.

New Release Book Review: Dr Bennett’s Babies by Fiona McArthur

Dr Bennett'sDr Bennett’s Babies was a delightful read. I enjoyed meeting Marcus and Matilda (Tilly), their initial meeting didn’t go so well after Tilly mistakes Marcus as a thief trying to break and enter into her neighbours house, and their subsequent interactions are all over the place when they find out they are working together and their views on birthing don’t align.

Marcus has some serious hangups, ones you can understand due to an awful event that happened to him and his family when he was a child, but Tilly is determined to make him face those hangups and rethink his beliefs on safe birthing and water safety.

I loved how Tilly was completely sure of her skills and her beliefs about how women should be able to give birth and wasn’t afraid to voice those feelings with Marcus, her new boss despite it causing more friction and problems between them. Every time I read a Fiona McArthur book I learn something new about midwifery and how things still need to change in the way babies are born and mothers and fathers are treated.

Marcus and Tilly were made for each other and despite neither wanting a relationship and their initial friction over their jobs, it was good to see them both find their way to friendship and love.

New Release Book Review: Truth or Dare by Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine

Truth or Dare - BT banner

thumbnail_TruthOrDare AMAZONI have loved Bash and Kieran since Dare You (book #1) and have thoroughly enjoyed their journey to finding their happy ever after. Truth or Dare did not disappoint, it was the perfect ending for these two fabulous characters. They had some big decisions to make, and I loved that both of them were willing to make sacrifices to be with the other. I also loved how completely open Kieran was to experiencing everything he could when it came to things that were new to him, and I loved how Bash was happy to show him all of those things.

I love Kieran’s brothers, I read Bailey’s romance ages ago and really need to catch up on Sean’s romance now since getting to know him better in this series.

A fabulous series which must be read in order. My Link to my reviews for Dare You (#1) & Dare Me (#2)

New Release Book Review: Two Hearts Healing by Renee Dahlia

Two Hearts HealingTwo Hearts Healing by Renee Dahlia is book 3 in the Merindah Park series and focuses on the third sibling Serena and her trainer boss Lee.

Serena is recovering from an accident whilst riding in a horse race, she’s dealing with the recovery of both physical injuries and traumatic brain injury. It is definitely not an easy time and Renee Dahlia does a great job of showing us some of the many impacts TBI can have on a person, while reminding us it is different for everyone and whilst someone can look physically ok, that doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling with hidden issues.

Serena is stubborn, whereas before the accident she would do as she was told, she is starting to find her voice and make decisions based on what she truly wants and feels is important to her, the top two things on her list are to ride again and to kiss Lee.

Lee has been blaming himself for Serena’s accident and has cut himself off from Shannon, Serena’s brother, and his friend, as well as from Serena. When she turns up unexpectedly asking for help to get back on a horse, Lee is left feeling emotions he has no idea how to deal with. His relationship with his parents has played a major role in how Lee sees himself and how he holds himself emotionally around others, and Serena is about to test every one of those walls and boundaries he has put around himself.

I really enjoyed these two characters, and while the banter between them was fun, there were also misunderstandings, arguments, and revelations. There is plenty of growth in store for both characters as they negotiate their feelings for each other and try and figure out what they want and what it means to have those things.

We met Serena in book two Making Her Mark as she is Rachel’s twin and they were both struggling to build a real relationship between each other as they are both quite different people. While in Making Her Mark Serena had Rachel’s back, it is nice to see their relationship has continued to grow and this time Rachel is there for Serena.

I have learnt a great deal about the horseracing industry through this series, in book one Merindah Park there is the issue of gambling, then in Making her Mark I leanrt about the extra work female jockeys have to do to get the same respect as their male counterparts, and in Two Hearts Healing I learnt about the care of horses and the issue of finding the correct homes for them when they can no longer race. It is evident that Renee Dahlia has great knowledge and love of this industry and is determined to educate us about what really goes on.

I’ve really enjoyed this series so far and I really hope there is a fourth for the last brother Shannon.

Thanks to NetGalley and Escape Publishing for a digital copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

New Release Book Review: Wicked Little Lies by Beth Prentice

Wicked Little LiesOnce again Beth Prentice has written a delightfully fun cosy mystery with plenty of suspense and laughs. Wicked little Lies is part of The Westport Mysteries series, but this one focuses on Molly who is Lizzie’s sister, the main character from the first 4 books.

I loved the first three books I read in the Westport Mystery series, I still have book 4 waiting to be read and this one starts off where that one ends (so it’s essentially book 5) so I need to get to reading it and fill in the gaps I know I am missing. It can be read as a standalone but all the characters from the original series are in this newest book too so it was a wonderful chance for me to reconnect with them all.

From the get-go there is chaos, action and intrigue aplenty to draw you in, this family, especially Grandma Mabel all seem to get up to some crazy things or caught in crazy situations. And it seems playing amateur sleuth runs in the family.

I really enjoyed getting to know Molly better and I really liked her boyfriend Matt, despite first impressions.  I can’t wait to see how these two go once the baby comes along and what else this family can get caught up in.

Thanks to the author for providing me with a digital copy of this book in return for an honest review.

New Release book Review: The Good Woman of Renmark by Darry Fraser

IMG_20191113_183424Within the first couple of pages, Darry Fraser managed to transport me, once again, to another time and place, and there I stayed for the whole novel. It is 1895 in Renmark, South Australia, and a tough young woman has just defended herself and her friend from a rapist. Fearing repercussion she is now on the run for her life and her freedom.

What a time to live in, where women have a lot fewer rights than men and a man’s word will always mean more than that of a woman’s. Maggie doesn’t think this is fair at all and refuses to live her life being a slave to a man and popping out babies (I so agree with her!).

I really liked Maggie, she was stubborn, tough, opinionated and determined, all things women in that time, and this need to get by (though at times she was too stubborn). I loved Sam, talk about loyal, what a fabulous friend to have in times like this. Sam was so in love with Maggie, throughout I just kept hoping Maggie would see that Sam wasn’t the kind of guy to make her give up her independence and give in to her feelings for him.

This was a great journey down the Murray River, seeing how others in that time lived and struggled to make ends meet. The horrible characters from Renmark, it turns out there is one more than we originally think, are not nice people at all, not in behaviour or morally and there were moments I wished that Maggie had truly finished the job she started when she defended herself and her friend.

This was another great read by Darry Fraser and I truly love being transported to the late 1800s in her writing, I also am truly glad I don’t live in those times.
